These are the kind of decisions that I (almost) can’t imagine happening at a private company. When the developer of a product you use goes public, you can expect with absolute certainty that it will become measurably worse over time. It mig

Ah yes I should have said something more like “in my usecase”, which is just to digitize ordinary texts that are still in print but that occupy too much space in my home to justify keeping!

I love the idea, although the risk of torn pages is mildly concerning for archival purposes or valuable books. Though if that were the case, I'm sure scanning by hand would be preferred anyway. I've often wanted a device like this

Forgive me if it’s common knowledge, but what’s wrong with SDL2 in this case? Broadly speaking, I feel as though there is largely positive sentiment around the SDL project, no?

I don't give a care how much more difficult it is for the employer. It's unambiguously GOOD for the applicant to know the expected compensation before applying. If you're opposed to wage transparency, I can only assume it

Really interesting recommendation! I had never seen this before, I’ll definitely give this a read. I always recommend “Ray Tracing in One Weekend” [1] series of books for some light coverage of linear algebra/geometry/graphics. [1

A former colleague of mine had a good impression of BSides in this regard, but I can’t remember which location/year it was (& there seems to be a lot)

I personally DO think it should be illegal for another human’s identifying features to be present in a digital photo without their consent, especially if it is shared online & doubly so if any money is made on it (including advertising)

I will never even consider using threads, because I will never use Instagram/Facebook. Even Twitter I only reluctantly had an account to follow specific individuals for information. I have a mastodon account but I don’t like it very mu

Agree. I would even be happy if the game was stripped of all licensed code/assets/tools/etc. And honestly, I don't even care if it can successfully compile/run. Just having the code alone would be tremendously usefu

Good, Kagi is great. The killer feature for me is the use of filters for programming/academic/forum results (in addition to having generally more relevant results overall). I will happily continue paying for this service.

I skimmed through a few videos and my impression is that it was incredibly well-behaved for a USA highschool (though I believe Eddie Woo teaches in Australia). My classroom in the USA was regularly far worse than these videos, which felt (a

One thing that I was unaware of, that seems even more dire than the api pricing changes, is that Reddit apparently intends to IPO in the near (< 1 year) future. This signals to me that the service is guaranteed to steadily worsen until i

I treat it the same way I do pre-LLM LSP suggestions, which is basically inline documentation lookup. ‘Oh what was that function name for inserting something at the end? PushB- no, InsertAft- no, App - end! Yea that’s it’ In this case it ga

Not to derail you but Premium costs $16/month when I view the option from the YouTube app on my phone. Not sure why this is the case. EDIT: Never mind it’s just the apple tax. I had forgotten about it.

Lobbyists butchered this legislation. Many of the suggested edits[1] by lobbyists to weaken the original - made it into the bill verbatim [2]. How do New Yorkers feel about unelected parties writing their laws? [1] https://www.do

I admire the author's enthusiasm. Unlike the author, I think I waste far too much time preparing to program. I'll spend days planning, procrastinating, & agonizing over the "perfect" approach to whatever problem&#x

Regulatory capture is so pervasive in the US that I’m afraid there’s little chance that the law will ever change to benefit consumers in a meaningful way.

Yes to all the above, actually. Using Electron as an example, applications are often >100MB in size, consume >100MB memory on the low end, & (subjectively) perform badly enough that I can easily feel and perceive the delay between
