For those wondering, since CockroachDB is not mentioned by name here, the post [1] from the same author on his own site does explicitly mention CockroachDB. "However, (unlike Google Spanner) CockroachDB does not wait for the maximum cl

This is do-able with FoundationDB. You could distribute your application colocated with the database nodes and write a router to redirect requests to the machine which owns the data you're looking for. Then your application logic is co

I've had FiOS issues in PA since around 6:30AM impacting a decent fraction of sites. YouTube was down for about 5 minutes. Slack still very flaky. A client who hosts a 5-figure number of domains on Cloudflare still unavailable to me, b

Yes. This is the plague of modern software. It is all over the place. So much software today spends all its time chasing pointers, using the cache poorly, and branching wildly. You won't see these aspects of poor design on a sampling p

Dictionary encoding strings to integers is a common compression technique. In GC'd languages it fakes out the garbage collector because your dictionary codes are essentially pointers but not actually pointers from the GC's perspec

You can do both! Use a basic sampling approach (recommended by Honeycomb and others) to sample e.g. one percent or less of your “boring” transactions, 10% of your suspect transactions, and all of your errors. By suspect I mean too slow by s

They do not use the phrase exactly-once delivery as far as I’ve seen, they say “exactly-once semantics”. And this is referring to a specific set of Kafka features that you previously had to build yourself if you used Kafka. I have not seen

That is still a useful tool in Go, but you don’t need to use it as much as you’d think. The GC is pretty good at short-lived objects. The canonical implementation is sync.Pool if you don’t want to build one yourself.

Range reads do create conflict ranges for the entire range even if you use offsets. Not only does it create the conflict range, I think it actually does the work of reading the data, it just isn’t returned to you. This is why it is an O(N)
