I think your apartment vs 20 minutes 'shorter commute' is actually vastly simplifying it. I live roughly in hayes valley (I moved here only 5 years ago, before the latest bunch, so I qualify as an 'old timer'), and my c

I saw your deleted comment, and while I do believe you worked a lot, you should probably also realize that what you did was also a product of it's time. Now a days one cannot just write a compiler in isolation and then make a million

I am finding the narrative around homeless in SF very odd. Often people compare the situation to places like NYC and then ask why San Francisco can't do that. Well... If by "that" you mean persecute and push homeless people o

The reality is private companies is where the value creation happens. The public market is too unwieldy. So we need an entirely new series of metrics for companies. This is one of them.

Ah yes the tests pass. Now it is time to relax and veg out. Oh wait, the test suite doesnt actually guarantee bug free software? Worse, test suites dont protect you from bugs in the specs? Well I can tell we are going to have a rough nigh

Are you sure about that? I wonder how much the shuttle system costs Google. It's hard to say for certain, but its probably in the millions of dollars a year. Now, let's contrast that to the BART extension to SFO, which was comple

I use fountain pens and paper to take notes in meetings all the time. I am trying to do more "thinking on paper", and I wouldn't give up the fountain pen for anything. Keep at it!

I am always a little frustrated at the Salon articles, I dont even know why I read them anymore. There is a few choice sentences I'd like to rebut: "And while there is much to dislike about how Silicon Valley is rewriting the rule

I find the C backlash to the excesses of C++ fascinating. On the flip side, I wonder how people deal with 'programming in the large' with C - other than 'just be really really careful'

ZODB is kind of neat, but how does it fare with non-python client libraries? I note the phrase "you can store anything that is pickleable" so I am thinking not?

I find you need two things: - the "troubleshooter" mentality/thinking pattern - extensive system knowledge I haven't figured out how to teach #1, except maybe for "don't have anyone to ask for help" and #2

They say never jump in an argument late... but here goes... There is a lot of people arguing in the positive for polyglot persistence. The arguments sound pretty appealing - hammer, nail, etc - on the face of it. But as you dig deeper into

In theory I agree with you, but the reality is that even though SQL databases are all on the same "standard" there is enough non-standard things that it in practice becomes impossible for high performance apps.

I talked to a Sr dev in a game tools company in Burnaby and he was making $85k. The reality is that in Canada tech staff are costs. In silicon valley tech staff are assets.

That looks like an awesome product! Kudos to the team, they truly did a great technical job here! From a market perspective, it kind of makes no sense. I challenge CTO/CIOs to justify building their company on a closed source critica

Get a job first, then done. US based employers tend to like Canadian educated students. Especially if you got good grades. Also even though Vancouver starts at $60k, it also ENDS at $80k. There is no upper limit to pay in silicon valley.
