She did not run the team until her husband promoted her to the role after the work was done. By her own admission she was working on beginner stuff in 1965. The popular claim that she was THE main person on the project is complete nonsense.

By the time you meet kids in CS at good schools they have all been heavily selected. Most kids at michigan or berkeley or wherever were easily top students with minimal effort their whole life. A decent number were genuinely outstanding. Id
