This is another way that Go's approach works well. In practice, you will see library code check for common image formats, and then dispatch to optimized code. The advantage here being that optimization is a library concern. Callers

I agree with your examples, but that code is pretty trivial. There is a point where inference can be over used, and that can cause readability issues. The OP ended with a call for empirical research.

Nothing says human safety like a technology that can make a species extinct. The motivations for elimination mosquitoes is noble, but I'm not comfortable about where this technology will go afterwards.

With all of the controversy around generics, this is one area where Go is really hurt. The language provides the building blocks for concurrency, but they still need to be assembled into something larger. There are examples of good concur

You've kind of hit the point with the second half of your comment. Two populations are virtually never identical, so you don't need any statistics to answer the question. A more reasonable question is whether or not you have the

I don't think that deplatform is the right idea here. Presumably, the videos will still be present and watchable. However, the algorithms used to sort and present videos must be seen as playing an editorial role, and that brings a di

It has been in the news in Canada, it just doesn't make the front page. Steven Pinker talks about this; slow steady improvements aren't reported because no one writes stories with the headline, "10 fewer people starved today

That's not enough for the stack traces. A crash in Go is way more informative than failing an assert in C. Whether the extra memory is worth it is a separate questions.

The current pace of development of C++ is questionable, but Rust is still a fairly young language, so the comparison to C seems unfair. Presumably, the rate of change in Rust will slow down. Although, if you are looking for stability toda

This thread is a prime example of the danger of p-values, which measure the likelihood of the data if you assume the null hypothesis . This is very different than the probability that the hypothesis is true.

Part of the problem is that p-values are not the best indicator in all applications. One question in my work is whether a process change affects the yield. A confidence interval of (-1%,+1%) is much different than (-20%,+20%), even though

Except that this isn't hypothesis testing. The graphs are not clearly labelled, but I'm interpreting the results as indicating that the entire population is shifted. This would be a significant advantage. (If it was hypothesis t

That's true, but not quite the same. There is one system and one payer for emergency care, as an example. You can't pay for additional or better care. However, eye glasses aren't covered by the public system. Additional c

I try pretty hard to make the close-outs failsafe. It is very difficult to manage errors or recover once you have started closing resources. However, you are then left manually calling file.Flush (for example), which can easily be forgott

A common idiom is the defer, for example, file.Close() only if there wasn't an error when the file was opened. You can also put them in an if statement. This means that the deferred function aren't strictly tied to their scope.

The one time I lived through a 10% reduction, the results were not catastrophic, but still pretty bad. Morale took a huge hit. What's worse, is that it spooks everyone. Resumes get updated, networks get activated, and you find a lot

I'm not certain that Go is a great fit for this particular area. Others have mentioned generics, but I'd also worry that the lack of operator overloading is a weakness. There is a lot of Fortran out there, so operator overloadin
