Walkability in the US is indeed dire, but: > Add to that how America sets up situations very unsafe street crossings, often 8 lanes wide without a median I don't think I've ever crossed an 8 line highway on foot (US native). I

Is this where I'm supposed to say Wine Is Not an Emulator? ;-) Jokes aside, totally right, and unfortunately, in my experience it's often a better experience to run the Windows port under Wine than it is to use the native version.

It made me switch, anyway, recently - specifically another one of those "Oh, let's finish setting up your computer" (i.e., try to trick you into trying Edge again, probably, or set up a "Microsoft" account) with my

In a previous life, for one org's "GitOps" setup, we mirrored Gitlab onto AWS CodeCommit (we were an AWS shop) and used that as the SoT for automation. That decision proved wise many times. I don't remember CodeCommit ev

Fortunately, it seems the EU will mandate removable batteries by 2027? Caveat: I haven’t done any research into that besides the headline, so YMMV. https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/06/22/new-eu-law-to-

I have found http://stable-diffusion-art.com to be an absolutely invaluable (and coherent) resource. It's highly ranked on Google for most "how to do X with stable diffusion" style searches, too.

I agree with the premise of the article, I think, but I find the "good SQL" versions... uncompelling. (1) Switching `left join` to the default inner `join` changes query behavior. I'm guessing it's intentional on the aut

Not exactly. For engineers, at least (not sure about other roles), the Google Cloud desk options are: 1. "Commit" to being in the office 4+ days a week. You get a dedicated desk as normal. 2. Accept a shared desk - assigned to y

Yep. And which is better for the customer can vary on the circumstances. I worked for a company that licensed its software both ways (depending on the customer), although as a disclaimer I was a software eng, not in sales. One thing I

Did they ever actually shut down SimpleDB? Last I checked, it was still online, although maybe they stop most accounts from creating new tables now.

The application needs to be developed with this constraint in mind. I’ve spent quite a lot of time over the years doing blue/green deployment advocacy and awareness for developers in some orgs. It does sometimes substantially complicat

There were 84 errors for GCP, but the breakdown says 74 409s and 5 timeouts. Maybe it was 79 409s? Or 10 timeouts? I suspect the 409 conflicts are probably from the instance name not being unique in the test. It looks like the instance name

I can’t speak for anywhere else, but I’m pretty sure Google uses a Proxy Auto Config script for go links, which should prevent that from happening in most cases. Disclosure: I work for Google.

Usually, devs use one of Google's web-based code editors. No local editor at all. The web editors are pretty well integrated with the rest of the dev stack... and they just work. CitC workspaces aren't mounted on laptops, so no Ma

Well, for starters there isn't just one dev machine :-) You at least have a laptop and a workstation. Possibly several of each. I believe there is no code at all stored on laptops, barring some exceptions. I am not entirely sure '

There is some nuance there. Because SLA violations typically have real-money impact, they're often backed by internal objectives (SLOs) that are quite a bit tighter. So if an API promises four nines of availability in its SLA, there is

That mirrors my experience too. At my last job, we had... a lot of annoyances with Ansible version upgrades. There is a lot of churn there. Stuff unexpectedly broke pretty often, and even when it didn't, it felt like a conveyor belt
