WireGuard did not make it into a release now did it? Code was indeed crap and they pulled it at the last minute. Lots of users were disappointed including me but then a better version was released as a package and I'm a happy camper.

Are you familiar with "vmstat -z"? It will show you any kernel limit that was hit under the "FAIL" column. When you know what is happening/failing its much easier to tune and scale. dtrace is also invaluable for thi

I agree, apt is a path well traveled and python2 -> python3 migration had some opportunities for improvement. On the other hand I can custom build nginx with a TUI and have package registered as an actual package instead of just being du

FreeBSD has superior: - package management (pkg & ports) - file system (native ZFS) - instrumentation (systat & dtrace) - documentation (handbook & examples in most man pages) - event notification interface (kqueue vs broken by

For media encoding you are essentially benchmarking the compiler. Sometimes makefiles force -O2 on BSDs vs -O3 on Linux, which should explain performance differences when using the same compiler.

IIRC the official reason for simply not porting kqueue to Linux 20 years ago was: "it's over engineered". Linux has a ton a brilliant developers working on it, they had to know epoll wasn't all there, the epoll man page

My favorite comparison is epoll vs kqueue. https://idea.popcount.org/2017-02-20-epoll-is-fundamentally-... https://people.freebsd.org/~jlemon/papers/kqueue.pdf

According to the benchmarks when using the same compiler (LLVM) and the same file system (OpenZFS) FreeBSD performance is 98% of Linux performance. 2% performance penalty is a bargain in exchange for Dtrace, kqueue, pf, jails, ports, outsta
