A lot of you seem to be working on commercial solutions to C's insecurity. Does this feel like a conflict of interest to you?

I wouldn't expect significant changes in RedHat just because Paul Cormier got moved up one rank. He isn't new to the company, and had a lot of influence in his previous role.

I lived in a similar place and I somewhat miss it. It isn't just parking spaces, the neighborhood was designed with walking in mind. Many streets had shops at the bottom floor, and I could do all my errands on foot. My elderly grandpar

That "stack grows upwards" conditional is a giveaway of ancient code. The only architecture I know still using that regularly is PA-RISC, and it's very rare for people to care about it today.

There are reports that they have a shortage of ventilators, so a lot of patients that could be saved are dying.

This comment is making me feel poor. I regularly wear a winter coat (and more) indoors instead of heating.

Cool. I recently saw a car with a light flashing the license plate periodically, I wonder if the driver was going for that effect.

NetBSD publishes updated builds of src daily, you can just update to them. No idea about the frequency of package rebuilds but they definitely happen.

If you want a simpler system that is easy to understand, NetBSD is a pretty good choice. The source is almost entirely in a single repository for you to read, and you need a single command to build a boot-able release (you can even build it

Oracle doesn't own all the rights to OpenZFS, people are intentionally adding their own copyright to ensure it stays under a copyleft license, and Oracle can't make it closed source by owning the rights (which they did with the ol

If you're only interested in scrolling through images, Imgur offers a much better user interface for that. can browse with just the arrow keys.

You definitely have some deal with them. I couldn't get them to respond before I showed some proof of warranty when my Dell XPS battery inflated.

Working in places that were based off permissively licensed software, the default position we had was "no upstreaming" and if I wanted to upstream something I need to ask for permission. when you're contributing to GPL softwa

I had trouble with imgur on firefox mobile. it doesn't allow uploads until you request the desktop version (which fakes another useragent string).

I got direct quotes from Apple employees about how their employment has banned them from doing anything related to GPLv3 code in their free time, specifically GCC. I don't want to mention them in a public website in case that gets them

they can remove reload tonight and most of HN wouldn't have a reason to care, but it'd hurt some old architectures. I personally tried to convert one of them but damn is it hard. bring out all the bugs!

I use a conventional dark theme and e.g. it flashes a white background whenever I open a new tab before applying a black background. And certain pages can't be styled to block themes from hiding things. It's inevitable that a good

In the past when porting netbsd to new architectures the approach was to first run a kernel with a binary compatibility layer to the existing operating system, be it something like OSF/1 or SunOS. Not only was it doable, but people did

Worth noting that removing 16bit support in windows is an enormous security win, because the DOS stuff relied on things that are really bad for security. 32-bit support is a lot more sustainable.
