As a consultant, I got to do lots of interviews. I found that questions and programming problems go in fads or cycles. I often get the same programming problem at more than one company. After an interview, I go over the problems to see i

To summarize, the answer is yes, if they are software developers and make a salary of $455 or above per week, unless they do mostly debugging. The answer, kiddies, is if you want overtime write buggy code.

The problem is that it is doctors everywhere in the chain. Doctors ignore the best practices, so they arent going to enforce the same on nurses. Doctors review doctors so the same problems again. Hospitals dont want the costs of gowns, e

Actually not. San Francisco, and East Bay MUD which supply much of the SF Peninsula and the East Bay both own their own Sierra dams and infrastructure. I dont think a hostage situation would ensue.

Residential users use about 10% of the water, last time I looked. Larger users are alpha, hay, and rice. So if we ban growing rice in the desert, we will have plenty for the people. CA rice is probably for export, because it is the shor g

You would love CA then, where the state seizes local taxes to pay state bills and the republicans rant on about lowering taxes. The cities are feeling the pinch and have to cut local services.

Thank god this wont happen. I live just north of San Luis Obispo and would be left with the same old mess. Better would be to fix the mess in Sacramento. A new governor with a more pragmatic outlook, Jerry Brown, passing the initiative t

Nice idea, but legalize is really a programming language that predates even COBOL. If you deviate seriously, you may get exceptions and loose your case. I think a better legal language would be even less understandable. For those of you w

IANAL, but I would hazard that you are wrong on nearly all points. There are very specific rules on the form of a patent application. It used to be/may still be that you had to include stylized drawings of a machine that accomplished the

So what's different from google? Top down control vs bottom up innovation. Google engineers have 20% free time to work on interesting projects. Something like that would do wonders for MS. Google didn't invent the 20% free time, 3M has

There seems to be a muddling of concepts in the article. My understanding of the concept of core grammar comes from Steven Pinker. The core grammar is not a syntax tree ready to parse anything, but a set of instincts that can be applied w

You are right of course. The trick is to move the incentives to get the desired result. If the system is fundamentally chaotic, a simple tweak would result in all claims being denied. Or 90% of all patents being denied would probably not

Patent reform would be best, but just changing the incentive system would do a world of good. IIRC the patent office is funded partly by fees, giving it motivation to quickly grant patents. Declining patents throws a monkey wrench into th

It looks like the systems, ie standard practices, were in place, but that the appropriate practice was overridden at several places. Haliburton did a poor cementing job but BP chose not to fix it. That is BP's failure, not Haliburton's.
