To increase agricultural output would be my guess. There is a parallel to this closer to home. There used to be a bounty on fox tongues because foxes were constantly worrying farm animals. Not sure about the outcome for the poor foxes but t

Not bad, except the British Government were in the business of extracting wealth more so than endowing... no doubt someone did the sums on this strategy and said “cor blimey let’s get out of here”

Whether you are “addicted” to something or not (and what defines “addiction”) is the wrong question, in my opinion. The correct one is whether your repeated, compulsive behaviour is affecting anyone else. If you knew it was, could you stop?

That’s true. But unfortunately all that baggage comes with lots of genuinely useful stuff too. Starting from scratch rarely works, unless you’re willing to put in a lot of time and effort, and are in it for the long haul, and people that wa

This is how old google would have worked. Now that google is all grown up they take a more cost conscious approach. How the mighty have not so much fallen, as sunk.

I think it’s a different thing but an interesting analog. In conventional information theory you can add another channel. I guess the social media metaphor is like crowded wifi or if I’m being clever alohanet... question is, how do we add a

Not really. In my version the energy wastage is a means to an end. Not the end in itself. In particular, energy usage is not coupled to value. It is “collateral” damage. You could in theory replace it with some other proof of work ...

Nope the value proposition is that multiple untrusted parties can agree on how much energy they’ve burned and form a consensus based on that.

Arguably yes. And arguably spaces are better for indentation as a matter of convenience and accessiblity and you can’t make any strong argument that it’s what tab is “for” based on original purpose.

I thought they were for aligning columns in a table (hence “tab”), rather than indentation? This goes back to typewriters. Sure you could abuse it for indentation and perhaps that became common practice at one point but it doesn’t mean that

I share your confusion to a degree. To me it always seemed that the concept emerged from the work on Semantic Networks [0] by Collins and Quinlan. What's interesting is, looking at this now that these two different aspects of what we n
