Besides the oft-quoted HN submission guidelines, another answer to your question is that women are usually the ones affected by sexism, and women read HN (no, really).

There's always something to think about while, say, running. Is my posture correct? Are my feet hitting the ground well? Is this a good pace? And lots and lots of self talk about not shirking the next effort (30s hard running, hill r

Couple points re this. People attending SM training are often just middle managers learning enough to know WTF their SMs and PMs are talking about in meetings. Also, there's no requirement for SMs to be coders, it's a role a lot o

Great guide. Interested to see the advice on doubling type-size for contrast. I thought sticking to the typography scale (10, 11, 12, 14, 16 etc) was a golden rule. The x2 factor looks good though. And now I can reliably type -, –, and –. T

Besides the reasons mentioned already, moving villages had another problem: no one did it unless they'd somehow ruined their reputation in their home village, or they'd been expelled. So a stranger turning up in a village would ha

Incredible pictures, and fantastic to see the method documented so well. I'd read about doing the reverse-lens thing but never seen a setup and couldn't imagine how it'd work. Also, the description of his post-processing is r

It adds drama to a performance. When a performer is a little shaky the audience empathise with them more. With perfection, people just sit back and let it wash over them. A performance I'll always remember was a community night, free e

This describes my personality perfectly. I learnt to cope with those situations by emotionally distancing myself from them. Then I'm free to respond more naturally.

You (and I) are almost certainly going to get it wrong first time around. Which approach is most forgiving of errors? I'd say monolith.

Here's Matt Ranney talking about how Uber's microservices-first approach allowed them to scale their workforce super fast; also how those microservices became a kind of decentralized ball of mud: https://www.youtube.com

You're corroborating a quote from the article, which I don't think deserves downvotes. Would you like to expand on your point? It might be illuminating for people already established in the industry.

I met a guy who does it, but just takes the tails. He considered the roo fresh if the blood hadn't congealed by the time he found it. This was in an environment where daytime temperatures are often 40C (104F) plus during the day.

I worked at a place like that, and took secret 10m naps in a storeroom. The storeroom was accessed via a bathroom I could lock. Noone ever asked, 'hey, what have you been doing in the bathroom for the last 10 minutes??'

I saw the program, the guy actually had a giant bowl of fruit, mostly frozen berries(!), and yes, apple peel. He seemed pretty cheerful, and it didn't look like privation. I do remember reading the blog of some guy way back around 2007
