Tangentially, http://sup.rubyforge.org implements a GMail-like interface, full-text search and such but works with (essentially) any source.

It implies that there is a disparity in effort vs. reward, which to many seems unfair (not to mention the truly rich have no need nor use for all their money). It is not that rich people do not deserve riches (well, some don't). It is that

I agree with you that the composer-style arm flailing is not great (even if intuitive to non-techies), but I do consider smaller, closer-proximity gestures a perfectly viable direction of research. > I'm not sure how learning a set of

I thought it was common to invent new terms or repurpose neutral ones rather than subvert common, loaded terms for your own purposes? I would not call it "oddball", I would call it either "intentionally misleading" or - granting benefit of

I do not understand, at all, where "stealth" comes into your definition of terrorism, or why everyone else should follow that definition? Traditionally at least, terrorism has been " the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce,

To be precise, it apparently cuts the risk of death by 60% for colorectal cancers, and 21% overall for cancers. It is still quite significant, but it does not actually prevent the cancers, just reduces their fatality rate.

URLs really have very little to do with REST beyond uniqueness, even though it is popular in "RESTful" APIs to encode objects in URLs. A POST /keypair/create or whatever could just as well be POST /1234567890123. The important bits of REST

Hopefully, as a security-conscious developer, you are also looking at alternate solution providers to reduce the potential risk of making all your info available to Google.

As with most things, being exposed to different influences tends to make you a better programmer. So does fairly routinely getting a grasp of a big or otherwise alien codebase. It might not work for everyone, of course, but it is probably b

I read those a few years back and they obviously come highly recommended, but in the same vein of historical fiction the best this year was: "Drood", by Dan Simmons.

I do not think that is accurate. A guy using fifty-year-old technology can still be useful (COBOL, for example). Knowledge (of the problem domain) should definitely be of more recent vintage.

Most people can learn to be OK at most things, with enough time or a "breakthrough". A significantly smaller number can be great at them.

I think the definitions are simply wrong. Talent is the genetic (and nurtured) predisposition toward something. Being great at something - often conversationally referred to as "talent" - is the combination of predisposition and practice. 1

Just on the off-chance that you are serious: it is of the utmost importance that the owner is a government, not a private person. The argument is that the government is keeping secrets from its people without the people being able to change

Dunno, I wasn't there. To me it seems that the U.S. government is probably the furthest-removed from the people among western nations - and Americans are by far the least trusting of government.

I think the first thing to do is to stop worrying overly much. You have enough funds for 2 years? You are not broke. You have plenty of time to learn and/or find another job, take your time. Find folks in whatever area you are interested in
