Working with less-than-stellar tools --- ahem ROS --- has taught me how to placate commands that assume interactivity and/or a tty. To wrap up the offending command with a "fake" `tty`, I do script -qfec "mycomma

Same. As soon as I read the title: "Surely `sshpass` still works in this instance? Yup." Even if avoiding good practices with PKI was defensible (and it definitely is not), further avoiding `sshpass` in favor of this more contorte

That's awesome. At my last job, I created a Makefile-driven abomination that would, for a specific form of shell script, generate .gitlab-ci.yaml fragment and "link" them together. I'm equal parts proud and ashamed.

My lab actually did have 88-gallon barrels for waste; one each for aqueous waste, organic waste, and ether waste. Ether waste was kept separate because we produced a lot of it and because it had to be treated with preservatives to prevent t

Heh. I never had the pleasure of working with aqua regia. I watched a grad student burn himself with it once. We were filling out incident forms for a week.

You probably could, assuming you had ptfe tubing (we didn't) but then controlling the flow velocity is harder. Heat of dissolution is real.

Ex-undergrad-assistant in a organic synthesis lab, here. I am extremely familiar with glass cleaning procedures, having done it nearly daily for one long semester. Base bath is how you clean glassware. The base bath was a _saturated_ soluti

It's also a great way to keep on programming when you need a CV and cover letter.

I love awk. Enough to shill for this: https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/effective-awk-programmi... If TFA is an excerpt for a book forthcoming on dead-tree media, then I'll be buying that one as well.

Ah, yes. Debhelper, and its many integrations. I routinely work with the various attachments dedicated to the management of sysuser accounts, systemd units, config files... Yes, it's daunting. It also handles literally everything.

Ah, yes, I'm familiar with this. That's how "vanilla" kernel source supports Debian packaging. Lintian predictably complains, but I suppose that's to be expected.

Yeah, I should have mentioned this is specific to nvidia. Update: fixed.

In the _most common_ case (with nvidia), your graphics stops working entirely and you spend (at least) an hour in a virtual console trying to undo what you did. Fun times.

Seconded. Step 0: deploy your own PKI, install certificates on your motherboard firmware, sign your kernel, sign your modules. Step 0.5: Sign your DKMSs from Broadcom, Nvidia, and Intel. Step 0.75: Re-sign everything because you missed a st

Can anyone see how these Debian packages are being built? Asking because the last time I looked at Canonical's packaging, it was a little hairy.

Seconded. How many in this thread have found generated code in source control? My trophy case includes artifacts produced by: flex, bison, gperf, swig, and one particularly nasty CORBA stub generator.

Looking at "professional" projects. There is so much objectively terrible code out there. Not only does it exist, but it actually generates revenue. I recall being simultaneously amazed and disgusted.
