+1 for MailChimp. The fact that they make sending out emails fun means they're doing lots of things right with the UI. They serve as inspiration for many of the things I'm starting to do with my own SaaS web app. Regarding the 37signals app

I think it's fine to interview a startups that Andrew has already interviewed. I'm sure with a lot of these startups, there's plenty there. Still, Andrew did a thorough (and great) job so it'll be interesting to see what the feel of this in

Frankly, your short comment was more enlightening than the article itself. It's so easy to say that with the right features, upgrade prompts, and pricing, things will work out -- much more difficult to actually do.

Agreed. That's what I ended up using and it's fantastic. Great CSS support and coupled with the TagSoup parser, you can convert almost anything.

Yeah, I used Flying Saucer: https://xhtmlrenderer.dev.java.net/ Only, I needed to parse plain HTML (not just XHTML) so I'm using TagSoup as the replacement parser: http://home.ccil.org/~cowan/XML/tagsoup/ This combination is awesome.

Prawn is pretty neat, but what I'd really like to see is HTML to PDF in pure Ruby. I had to use a Java library wrapped in a Ruby module to do this. Complicates my server configuration (needs the JVM) more than I'd like.

I live in West Palm Beach, and I have to say, this is one of the worst places for a startup. The mindset here is anything but entrepreneurial. It's ridiculously difficult to get any sort of traction going. People come here to retire and die
