OP's point exactly. Christmas is a set of rituals.

I understand your point, the features are useful and they do save lives. It's just... where do you draw the line? You can't practically prioritize life infinitely above every other concern. If you did, the solution would be to

What about the people who can't afford a car because of these features?

Cars from the 2000s had all of this and were much cheaper than cars now.

Yes. But they stopped making it like that. The new Leaf base models are $28k minimum, have lane assist, auto braking, high beam assist, smartphone integration, 8" multi touch display, voice recognition, and more. I paid around $12k in

I suppose I'm not the target market for this. To me this is just added complexity that increases cost and likelihood of something breaking. I'm still waiting for someone to make a "battery on wheels", an electric car wit

I think this happens with a lot of languages. The Rust implementations just get more eyeballs and press. Presumably because of the inherent memory safety + speed of (non unsafe) Rust.

Technically, that is not the same thing. That's monetization through SaaS, which is one of the strategies mentioned (Hosted, plug and play solution as a SaaS).

I see. My mistake then. I edited the OP comment to include an actual open source version what I am attempting to describe.

If the non-commercial use license includes a copy of the source, why isn't that open source?

It's related, but the Open Core model described in the article mentions extra paid features surrounding an open core anyone can use. What I am describing is the same set of features priced differently for different use cases.

There is one important monetization strategy that is overlooked by this article: dual licensing. License the source explicitly for non commercial use only, then offer a commercial use licensed product (plus support, usually) for a fee. If t

No, because the inventory value is denominated in widgets, not USD. What's important is that each transaction balances to zero. It doesn't have to balance across transactions.

A high unimproved land value tax, like 80%+, solves the problem because it prevents land cost increases due to speculation. The profit from owning land becomes whatever use you put the land to, instead of profiting just from owning it. I co

If you are comfortable with a text editor, I recommend https://plaintextaccounting.org . I use Beancount with the Fava gui. It's great.

My non-expert understanding for number 1 is that you would record the widget account in denominations of widgets, and separately, record the widget cost for that transaction. That's what you do in beancount anyway, which is what I use

I use this, except I use Beancount. It's written in Python and is easier to write your own little extensions. There's also a GUI called Fava that goes along with it and is really good.
