Took > a month off after being burned out by a previous corp. It did wonders for my mental health and gave me time to learn a lot of fun stuff. I already had a new job lined up, but I highly recommend saving up a bit of cash reserves to

Talking out loud is really helpful. I often put in headphones and walk around my neighborhood and talk to myself. Looks like I’m on the phone, but I work out a lot of problems this way

Distributed services with go was incredible. Really made me think any software abstractions more. Also I kept getting motivated to dive into things deeper like RAFT consensus, etc

I second this! That book really challenged me and the course was a ton of fun

Udemy Personal Plan. Unlimited video courses. Many courses for many things, I learn a lot in there. There are varying degrees of depth. Everything from compilers, x86 reverse engineering to Next.JS dev

I second this advice. Best book and netted me a lot of money since. It’s a lifelong process, but bogle is a great start. Also it’s a fairly passive strategy that ignores media hype.

What is JS not good enough for w.r.t front-end dev in your eyes?

Tell that to young children who’s brains are still developing and who don’t understand the consequences. Not every child can have a parent to teach them the rights and wrongs of the world. Sometimes policy enforcement helps situations like

One thing that would be interesting is scanning for open ports. Once you find an open port, make a Twilio API and text the number (Since most airlines enable texting via SMS/Whats APP) that triggers opening the port on your VPS that is

I’d simplify the landing page and remove the annoying popups to sign in. We are all sick of google and the last thing I want to do is sign in to another search engine.

I bought a lightphone. It's expensive and buggy, but it helped kill my phone addiction. Dumb phone with music and maps.

This sounds neat. I wonder if there is a Go equivalent. I’m almost done with “Building Distributed Services in Go” and it’s also really cool. You build a distributed log service (ie Kafka) from scratch and it’s extremely informative for und

I bought my pi for $5 and it runs a fully functional VPN, DNS server and as blocker on my network. Can run some custom code on there to handle DHCP leases, etc. Chip shortage made things tough but they’re still cheap when you can find one

Just run OpenVPN through UDP. It’s supported natively and I get fast speeds. You can use DynDNS or Pihole to avoid needing a static IP

Shout out to Ben Eater. This dude explains how the internet works and rips open an Ethernet cable and hooks up an oscilloscope to it and decodes the bits that transfer over the physical cable. Very informative!
