This. Github is the killer app for dvcs. Both git and mercurial are good enough, and github simply makes it a no brainer.

The original agile manifesto was definitely not a dogma. If someone presents it as such today, you can usually follow the money pretty easily to figure out why.

Maybe. I find that if the code I'm working with is decently written (i.e. paired on, done via decent TDD or BDD), then the need for a debugger rarely arises.

Can you expand on what sort of caching you are talking about? Client side caching in the JS layer, varnish or some other http level caching, some sort of server side in the Rails app itself, etc ?

Can someone who is at least 'intermediate' in vim give me a reason as why a vim guy would switch? I'm saying this as someone who feels the need to use a debugger maybe once every 3 or 4 months.

There is a very valuable post and discussion to be had about why a developer may choose Linux over Apple for their primary dev workstation. This isn't it.

I will give you the answer now -- it won't hold up :). Parsing and handling email is notoriously finicky, and every app I've written or maintained to do it has a constant stream of little bugs and edge cases that must be tested and handled

Agile is not best practices. http://www.satisfice.com/blog/archives/27 Sorry, just one of my pet peeves, and describing agile as == best practice doesn't help anyone.

No, not really, if the goal is to build better docs (which are sorely needed for clojure), and not to simply use a clojure web framework for the sake of using clojure.

Note that Durham, NC is home to Relevance, my employer, and by extension, Clojure/core (though the Clojure original gangsta Rich Hickey lives in New York). We have 20% time and do lots OSS on fridays, amongst other things.

Of course, the very idea of tracking and working on "improving" via meditation goes against the core idea of zen meditation itself. But I'm interested in your startup anyway. :) edit: in fairness, there are many types of meditation beyond z

Exactly. Everything old is new again. There are significant costs for real world apps to what the OP is suggesting, and you can't abstract them away in a framework or library, as much as you may wish it to be the case. See also: http://en

Does anyone have any suggestions for backing up 6 GB of gmail data to somewhere easily? I have my own personal domain I could sync it all to, somehow, I suppose. Then I need a linode box, scripts, etc, etc... I don't really want maintain o

He probably called it a "mess of bash scripts" because, uh, it is a mess of bash scripts. Have you looked at the implementation? RVM is amazing in the functionality it has, don't get me wrong, but it hacks into your shell in some nasty wa

This isn't surprising to me. While CI Joe was decent and simple, its really extremely limiting once you want to do anything moderately complicated. Jenkins has a crummy UI, but it is very powerful and has a lot of useful plugins. If you a
