Hadoop is hardly our only hope -- off the top of my head there is Yahoo S4 for expressing streaming topologies of large-scale data processing. There is Google's Sawzall language for efficiently 'sawing' through and aggregating stats about o

illumin8, can you please read this post and explain why you think it is wrong? http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=782.msg8625#msg8625 If you back up your wallet prior to the transaction of 1BTC, it will not receive the private keys

From the forum post referenced, it appears that this is untrue. If I backup my wallet today to a thumb drive, then spend 1 BTC of my money, then my backup is worthless as it will only have the keys to an empty address. The only way to backu

The total number of coins held by every BTC address are always known because it's part of the public block chain that every participant in the network holds a copy of. The guy's 8999 BTC are visible in this chain, he just doesn't have the p

Hm, I don't think so. This post is dated May 3rd, which predates the Skype deal's announcement by 7 days. Also, the WhatWG group for RTC's mailing list was first posted to April 12, 2011. So that potentially indicates this was in the works

Where are the confidence intervals and error bars? In order to be taken seriously when aggregating 1.8MM comments, you need those. The variability in pg's plots makes me think the data for any individual is going to be just as noisy.

I contribute to Mixxx ( http://mixxx.org ) and it's our VCS. When we made the switch from SVN, we did it mainly for the very nice integration with Launchpad. Without Launchpad it wouldn't be worth the trouble. Also, it's really dog slow com

That's one way to train a translation system, but that's not related to the Translate API -- I'm asking, what benefit does Google receive from usage of the API? They already have the entire Internet in their index -- it's not like they need

How does using the translate API help Google? They already have the largest source of natural language text in existence (the web) -- why would they need your translation queries?

For e.g. the translate API, how could they train their algorithms? There is no feedback associated with it (that I know of).

I thought one of the goals was for it to be fully decentralized. If I'm relying on a nameserver I trust (let's say ICANN starts running their own .bit mirror) then what's to stop ICANN from making edits to whatever they serve up as per what

I think there is a scaling problem here -- every client in the network has to hold a full copy of the entire block-chain in order to know every host on the .bit TLD or to participate in acquiring and actively renewing one's domains. DNS sol

Each worker can handle many thousands of concurrent connections so this isn't really an issue. This is where nginx and Apache differ. Generally you want one worker per CPU core.
