As a scientist, it's nice to have an option where I can easily espress my problem, and get a speedy solution at the end. Julia hits this sweet spot. I translated some of my code from one of those general purpose languages to Julia 0.2

What's weird about it? They deny that there's such a thing as a no-go zone in Sweden. Fits with my experience, as I've never encountered a place in Sweden that felt like that. Contrast that with here in Chicago, where there

Not so. Here's what one prominent hospital administrator (and academic physician) has to say about it. http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170124/OPINION/1701...

I'd like for you, along with everyone else, to pay an increased income tax to cover health care for everyone (the way every other industrialized country does it). And before you reject that notion, try asking someone from one of those

Which is, of course, exactly what happens: those with insurance subsidize those without. Why do you think a simple bandage or ibuprofen costs so much on insurance? To cover those that walk into hospital ERs, uninsured. It's a hidden

Click on the battery icon in your menu bar, and see if there are any programs using "Significant Energy". Some programs will switch on the discrete graphics card without needing it, for example.

Actually, that was the second proposed site. The original proposal would have put it right next to Soldier Field, where it would form a wall blocking the lake. So you can see why the Friends of the Parks didn't want it there.

Check the notice. They were also blocking APs in cars and busses driving outside the convention center.

You already had that information. I doubt most users switch away from the uber app the instant they leave the car, so the "while using" permissions would allow you to collect all of that. I also doubt that Uber as a company, and

Why limit yourself to zero or one? Julia now lets you use any start point you'd like. A fairly recent change, so you might have missed it. http://docs.julialang.org/en/latest/devdocs/offset-arrays/

This is exactly why all of my off by one errors happen in zero-based indexing languages. I need 1-based languages for data analysis, and 0-based languages for working on instrumentation.

I agree. I'd estimate I restart the REPL about three or four times a day while developing. My analysis runs are minutes or longer, so a few seconds spinning up Julia+packages just doesn't ammount to much.

Exactly. If I were to contrast typical American furniture with Scandinavian, I would say that the American is designed to look "heavy", as if heavy == quality. Put a bunch of that in a room, and it weighs down the room. Some pe

This one's a classic. It was one of the most memorable papers that I read as a grad student, so now I cover it every year in my course. Really enlightening.

Yes, I've used it for a number of academic research problems in biophysics. Our first manuscript that used it is in review right now. To get "real work" done, I stuck with the 0.3 line. I've found it to be quite stable.

Great news. The core developers had said that this was in the works at last years JuliaCon. Now they can make a living through consulting while continuing to work on Julia.

Right, so innate it is. Folks who have studied design will be upset to learn this. Again, I'm not saying that this is a perfect example, but the points he makes are valid. I've had to deal with similar issues creating figures and

Are you saying that design is innate, and can't be learned? I disagree.

The one on the left really is a train wreck. All the points that are brought up with alignment, grouping, and sizing of related elements are clearly illustrated in these two examples. Not saying the right is perfect, but it's far bette

> It is interesting your example about Matlab. Did you design it with vectorisation in mind? Sure did. I've been using MATLAB since before it had a JIT. In fact, for the Julia code I didn't even devectorize which would play t

>On the Julia homepage I don't even know if Julia can even do graphics. Can it? Well, you could scroll to the bottom of the page... My personal experience with Julia is this: I rewrote an algorithm from MATLAB to Julia, and receive
