A Hash Table's double hashing [1] creates an arithmetic progression. Improving bounds of this theorem could lead to faster, smaller hash-tables. This is the first wild speculation I could come up with. [1] https://en.wikiped

The tape size needed for a Turing machine is incalculable. Here's a reference to a proof: https://scottaaronson.blog/?p=2725 . The machine with 7918-states, Z, stops (well, Z cannot be proven to run infinitly long) iff

There is a physical limit to the number of disks you can add to your CPU. There is a physical limit to the memory you can address in your CPU (48-bits). It is not arbitrarily large. Also wrong for Turing Machines, it really is infinite. Tha

A Turing machine is a mathematical concept. It has, by definition, infinite memory. A computer is just a real machine that can do similar things as a Linear Bounded Automaton, a Turing machine's little brother who'll never do quit

Why would this be? The goal of the test is to have a minimal baseline. Considering outside proof of this baseline is not unethical. If maybe it shouldn't be used to rank candidates, but you'd probably do this anyway for the final

The dominant hand is also important. As a lefty I have a tendency to evade left resulting in a will-they-won't-they when the other evades in the same direction.

It is deemed a qualified use to limit gambling because gambling addiction hurts more than just the addict. Their family suffers, maybe society suffers because of crime. Limiting (not outlawing) allows for outreach, voluntary blacklists, esc

I'd say that the needing rewrites is bad for the future clarity of the code. So much so that people conclude the 50% performance hit is worth it to use open polymorphism (interfaces, etc.) over closed (tagged unions, algebraic data typ

I do. Because I was asked to add a convex polygon and calculate its area. And now the shape_union must be rewritten from scratch. ... And maybe we want set-operations in the future...

my 2 cents: I don't see algebraic data types as strictly superiour. It's just the other side of the polymorphic coin: there is open and closed ploymorphism. Open polymorphism happens with interfaces, inheritance, and typeclasses-

Here's a scenario: you took a nice long hot bath. It got dark outside. You get out and want to turn on the light. Do you want to open the door and let the cold air in? Do you need to cover yourself first?

The analogy with sexuality and gender bothered me. It is a sore point and fragile. The solution for them is (foremost) equality, the solution for people with disabilities is egality. Yes, society changed to help people as much as possible.

Please don't. Society forces everybody to interact socially. In a society where everybody is expected to date anybody, forcing somebody to date is still abhorrent.

First, I did not find any statistical test in the paper. The sample size is not relevant. Further the power of a test already required you to know two parameters: variance and the size of the effect your testing for (difference between mean
