Pool heater too. In our building we have massive AC units and a separate heat pump to warm the pool.

Like the article says, US is probably the best of the Western healthcare systems right now.

Depends a lot on your application and how big the changes are. IF you're an online store and you're pushing out incremental changes to a subset of users its a good strategy. If its aircraft auto-pilot not so much.

> For electricity, the hottest week of the summer costs more than the coldest month. This is true of the USA, but is not true about Europe, where few people have AC, and you only see the sun a few hours a day.

I've been genuinely scared of global warming and such mild winters but this year I appreciate the benefits.

Looks like a strawman, that isn't the ServiceLocator I expect, it looks like he's writing his own DI engine.

by rr808 4y ago
The alternative of wiring up your own dependencies is pretty trivial and I really prefer it. Martin Fowler calls it a Service Locator, https://martinfowler.com/articles/injection.html#UsingAServi...

"Vert.x in Action" Julien Ponge (2020). I've been reading it for a new job I'm in that uses Vertx. Best framework and textbook I've seen in years. So refreshing to write Java without Spring magic. I'm not lovin

The problem is baby boomers are retiring en masse, and we need workers to take over. The housing problem is squeezed as a side effect for now.

Yeah I wish there was a strong jobs market for Rust developers then I'd feel like I wasn't wasting my time.

Western countries are all trying to encourage immigration because without it their populations will collapse. Right now populations are rising and causing house prices to rise but soon boomers will start dying leaving huge numbers of homes

Aside from the annoyance of the lifestyle of tourists vs residents, you miss out on having a normal neighbor who you can build a relationship over time with. Our neighbors keep a key, water plants while we're away, babysit our kids, ge

Its not just the shortage, its the change in usage. I live in fear that one of my neighbors will become an Air BnB house. Instead of friendly people next door you can grow with, there will be a continual turnover of short term people, parti

I'd love a web based framework that worked as well as VB or Delphi worked 30 years ago. Is that really asking too much?

I dont think Tokyo has any valuable lessons for Western cities. People talk about how its affordable but its only a few decades since it was by far the most expensive real estate in the world.

No mention of cold weather. Do any of the new batteries keep their charge better when below freezing?

by rr808 4y ago
Agreed, this has taken me years. It also is tough because lots of people over use it IMHO. When the logic keeps bouncing around dozens of classes its too hard to follow, even if its easy to test.

I really struggle with this because I'm a C++/Java dev who is 4/10 with Python. I dont understand why anyone would choose a single threaded language but its just everywhere I can't avoid it.

Look at XPS15. I think the 13 makes too many compromises to make it tiny. 15 is pretty small itself. It works with Linux flawlessly, but I'm still jealous of M1.

Excel-Dna works great. C#, Doesn't need access to registry so easy install.

Ah interesting thanks, I'll have to try it out.

Any new or good ways to do this? I used Excel-Dna 10 years ago.

One of the problems with this too is that a major reason people live downtown is for the short commute to the office. If the office doesn't exist or in the suburbs, is living downtown still be attractive?

Yeah Putty worked great but was a bit-unorthodox compared to openssh. Other interesting change is unix style \n line endings working everywhere even notepad. Its also combined with other changes like browser hosting most apps, vscode being

Windows Terminal has completely changed how I view Windows. Open a console and ssh to anywhere. Open a WSL console and use Linux on the desktop. Hard to believe.
