Gnome was taken off as the default because it wouldn't fit on a CD. After some work to get it to fit on again, Gnome is back as the default.

So I use Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop and Linux Mint Debian Edition on the desktop. LMDE is OK, but I'm not sure Mate is a long-term solution. On the one hand it is great that they have maintained the old look and feel of Gnome 2, but forking

I really hope that Virgin are not stupid enough to go after you in some lawyery way over this. I think you are already running a risk by disclosing this at all. The usual next step when a company doesn't show willingness to fix a security p

The developer of a jar can specify a Class-Path entry in the Manifest file to set up the classpath correctly. In this case, "java -jar some.jar" is all you need. https://blogs.oracle.com/olaf/entry/jdev_including_a_classpa...

Do people really still make the `=` vs `==` mistake? GCC -Wall has had "warning: suggest parentheses around assignment used as truth value" since as long as I can remember.

I added these to ~/.mozilla/firefox/random.User/chrome/userContent.css and restarted firefox. I wrapped the changes in a `@-moz-document domain("www.google.com")`, just in case. Shame a CSS hack can't get the sharing features back!

A couple of terminal applications that aren't vim that also use j/k are screen and w3m. Screen on its ctrl-a " selection screen and in ctrl-a esc mode, w3m on just every webpage (though it also uses emacs ctrl-v to scroll down a page).

I get the feeling that what these sites really mean is that you shouldn't deep-link to their images. They've just got it a bit wrong in the T&C. Especially when the sites say "we may disable the links", they surely just mean they'll pre

http://www.google.com/trends?q=perl The downwards trend seems to be flattening off, maybe "it's losing popularity at a slower rate" would have been more accurate? Seems pretty cruel teaching undergrads Perl when they could learn Python.

FWIW, I agree with you here. The other style changes were pointless (the "If I'm.." to "For example, if I'm.." nonsense). You can always roll back a change to your own question though. In the editor's defence, a lot of low-rep users post re

Google showing adverts on google.com/search is one thing, but I think the real metric to look at is usage of the Google advert network on the sites themselves. The more googlesyndication.com or doubleclick.net on a site, the spammier it is

I wonder what http://www.appbrain.com/ uses to access Android Market data? It must have some sort of API to get the new apps on there, they update very quickly. Older apps less so, it takes a day or so to sync up. There's also http://cod

The new NDK lets you write an application entirely in C, no need to get your hands dirty with Java at all. Of course this only works with android-9 (2.3), so if you want to write a game that people can actually play you'll still need a Java

If you've never seen an Android advert before, it looks like clicking it will "dismiss" the advert and this seems even more prominent on Angry Birds. I know I misclicked the advert once. There were comments on the market saying that the adv

Just change it now, the internet will catch up. The sooner you do it, the better. Obviously only do it if you really want to change the title. (FWIW I don't really like the "an" either, sorry!)
