Yes, Agile in not a panacea: you can't just drop it into an existing org and expect things to be rainbows and kittens. It needs to be accepted both at the grass-roots level AND management level. Then when Agile fails a person or an organiz

It's great that your organization is responsible about it. Sounds like there's a great deal of trust in your organization. It sounds like there are numerous ways for this to go badly - ie: when it gets noticed that you went over 37.5 hours

I also would be interested in a blog post about this. Seems to me (and some other commentators) on this thread, that very often there's an "infinite" amount of work to do, and I don't see how that squares with "we pay you for results". A te

I went to a Christian school growing up, K-12. This is very much true. (Or at least the vocal Christians, the neocons/Pentecostals) I'd also add that there's very much a persecution complex going on too: they believe that the world is out t

First thing: You /about page currently asks you to log in. It would be cool if you didn't have to do that. Beyond that, it looks interesting, especially if you can (or do) use some sort of Fuzzing tool: messing with the inputted code to mak

Especially one you wouldn't have for the next 5 years, given how long average employement terms are. Yes, I could move across the country for a job (let's say in SF), but then someone wants me to move to Austin or North Dakota or Seattle...

My current team uses http://www.jaconda.im for chat. Before that most teams just used Skype chat groups. Why Jaconda is cool: 1. Web interface OR it works over GChat. So I can use my native IM client 2. There's a pause chat feature,

Thank you for your comment and your effort. I get a little chuckle everytime I see job ads for ROCKSTAR DEVS, thinking, "Really? Can you actually handle a rockstar dev?" Having seen classical managers call a group of mild mannered programme

I've had similar thoughts: everyone seems to be chasing the developer with 5 years Rsils experience, worked at Zynga, lives in the Bay Area, went to Stanford, (probably) is willing to take stock options for a reduced salary, and is a JavaSc

What drew me to TM1 were the several innovative features for the time (mid 2000s) that were promptly copied into other editors (and sometimes improved there): * snippets * fuzzy file finder * project file list * multi-column editi

Slightly, yes. If you program for your day job you're using your editor something like 2,000 hours a year. I paid for TextMate something like 5 years ago... given that I used it for approaching 10,000 hours since then... A text editor and a

I would agree, to an extent. (Even) in tech work right now there's a huge bias against remote workers. The market is hot.... Assuming you live in SF or NYC. It's pretty dry - even for tech - if you live somewhere else. (just look on github

Ok, let me drill down into to a little bit. You say, "equity has a peramanent effect". But don't most equity contracts have a vesting period, and thus if you fire the engineer before the vesting period is up well the person forfeits that eq
