Hi Peter, thanks for your response. If you'll see below, my question is more on the practicalities of this (copied at the bottom of this comment.) Personally, I'm not aware of any VCs in the "dividend business", but I'm by no means an exper

My impression was that they were pressured into selling off their shares of Alibaba in order to generate cash to buy off some activist shareholders with either a dividend or share buyback. Marissa then reconsidered after taking the helm, an

From everything I know about PG and YC, I highly doubt they themselves would take that kind of action unless a post was outright slander. It just seems Nixonian. That said, there is obviously quite a bit of goodwill on HN for PG and YC. You

Thanks for the tip :) No, I'm well aware of App Engine and Heroku. I guess I'm talking about an even greater level of abstraction and simplicity - an "Apple Easy" layer where you never have to think about any aspect of the servers, and that

My impression is that quite a bit of the source for flagging, vote-ring, and spam detection isn't included in the arc download, for obvious reasons.

I've actually thought about this, but I think there would be conflict with the investors in that there might be a sense that their shares are being taken hostage, especially if this plan wasn't disclosed upfront. If the company has no inter

I'm not knocking Treehouse - apparently they have a good reputation, and I haven't personally tried their product - but I was astounded at the number of employees on their About Us page: http://teamtreehouse.com/about compared to the amou

I've got to be honest, I've never made that connection. To me, W3 is simply a popular abbreviation for WWW, like "dub dub dub". When you think about it, at 9 syllables WWW has probably the highest word-length to syllable ratio out there.

If a young founder makes it known that he's in it for the long haul with no possibility of IPO/acquisition - we're talking decades - presumably the value of their shares would be depressed significantly. It's a bit like having the deed to s

Yep. That's really my question anyway - is there a path to victory as a non-bootstrapped startup that doesn't include IPO or acquisition. How would you structure things to where investors and employees are confident they would share in the

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe YC's shares are non-voting, and I know that they don't insist on a board seat, which makes the machiavellian scenarios above even more far fetched.

It seems like we are having two different arguments. My main point here has been that material scarcity will likely be a non-factor in the future. You seem to be in agreement with that point, but seem dead set against the practicality of sp
