That was my first thought, but then I think we'd see a larger drop on the 30th as well, since that's the last day of the month sometimes too. Someone suggested doing a graph with "days until end of month" on the X-axis, which might be inter

Great point! Dividing by expected would have been a much nicer solution. I think the method I used still works though, just not as nicely. Am I wrong?

That's an interesting idea, but I don't think that there were enough speed cam records to do that. If you notice the graphs before and after I discarded them, they are pretty much identical.

I agree! That might be a good reason for an update.

I was originally thinking that the drop on the 31st could be explained by the last day of the month not counting for quotas, so they could be tallied or something. Then I realized that the last day of the month varies, and that it if that w

1) Yes, there were far fewer tickets in the data for 2009 and 2010 than 2011. 2) The fact that the normalized numbers were so small was very unintuitive to me at first too, but the important thing to realize is that in that formula, you're

I think you're right in that the question of the title is really two questions. I tried to make that distinction clear in the analysis and conclusion sections. I didn't actually try to find information on quota policies (specifically for Ba

Thanks. There is so much more that could be explored here. It's difficult to really come up with an answer with so many different factors, which is why I'm reluctant to point the finger at quotas in my conclusion.

Just from a brief look at a calendar for 2011 and 2010, it seems like the days were pretty evenly spread out over the week.

I'm playing around with the data[1] and it looks like you may be on to something. October 31, 2010 (Halloween) had 122 tickets, while August 31, 2010 had 531! [1] https://data.baltimorecity.gov/Financial/Parking-Citations-2...

That was actually compensated for in the "Correcting for more frequent dates" section. The first graph of that section shows what you would expect the distribution to look like, since not all months have the same number of days. The followi

That's an interesting thought. It looks like they were spread out pretty evenly throughout the week in 2011 and 2010, though. > as well as for the dates that only happen in a few months out of the year That actually was compensated for.

I don't think the "Did you mean [...] ?" popup should block the password box. Maybe it should appear on the top instead? My email address uses a .io domain and it suggested the .com domain. Since it blocks the password box, it seems like it

Is it necessary to associate feedback with the user's email address after you've confirmed their identity? If you don't associate their information with the feedback, I think users would be a lot more confident in your promise of privacy. Y

If the problem is that you have to change email addresses when you switch providers, I think the easiest solution is to use your own domain. Then you can use whatever mail client you prefer, and switch between them freely; you really own yo

Very interesting article! Just FYI: In the top left corner of the iPhone screen on the giveaway page [1] I see, "Receivd." Is this a typo? [1] http://kicksend.com/iphone_giveaway EDIT: Nevermind - I saw "Receivd, Inc." in the footer.

I think that the window manager is a little lower-level than what you're thinking of. If you're running a Mac, you would already have whatever proprietary program Apple uses in OS/X to display windows and the desktop environment. This is my
