And you can get 2 batteries w/ charger shipped from HK for like $12. There's really not much reason to worry about battery life now (except on the iPhone).

Agreed but HN readers are not their primary targets. For an INTJ the key to mass marketing is to understand why patterns that you don't like work on people unlike you. P.S. I'm not sorry for not using another pattern on you.

Study mashable. They use a bunch of patterns that are simple, direct, enticing, appeal to ego/self-improvement (for men) or create an emotional response (for women). Apparently this works superbly w/ their ADD social media targets. 1. "Top

I have a friend who invested ~$10k in AAPL in 2003. He's considering moving to NV or TX for a year, to avoid the massive CA 10% long term capital gains tax.. we joke that Steve Jobs is partly responsible for CA's mass exodus.

It's not a war for search. It's a war for user attention. Per Alexa, the average FB user spends 30+ mins on FB each day; the average GOOG user spends <10 mins on GOOG. And FB has far more extensive info about each user. I think the risk

An absurd recommendation. Bandwidth/hardware costs are rapidly declining, and already low vs developer time. Unlike 5 years ago, there's very good, free software addressing common, high scale issues today. Do you need to spend weeks writing

Mid 20s extroverts appear to punt these kinds of concerns by drinking and sleeping around shamelessly. I'm still investigating if that really works.

Because many/most ISPs block simple outbound src addr spoofing. pwnat works b/c ISPs don't (currently) inspect deep enough to notice spoofed addresses in the error packet contained inside ICMP. This is an arms race b/t clever hackers and th

Perhaps foreign ad networks are finding native partners, instead of going after English speakers. There are >800M mandarin speakers, surely, that's enough to attract a lot of advertisers, just maybe not US ones.

Advising many people to buy on a predictable date smells like an attempt to create a profitable liquidity trade: short on the 1st, cover on the 2nd when prices return to normal demand levels. Buy on a random day, or a down day. :-)

Here is my reasoning -- An Atom Z530 1.6GHz core has almost exactly 2X the Dhrystone MIPS of a 1.0GHz ARMv5TE-based network SoC (I actually ran it; those are not bogus vendor marketing #s). A9 probably has much higher IPC than ARMv5 -- but

A PA VP told me Steve Jobs asked them to drop their nearly-finished Power design immediately to build AAPL a custom ARM SoC; they said no, so he bought them, to help them say yes. He probably could have poached their stars for a lot less th

A 1.6GHz Intel Atom spanks an entire week of lunch money out of a 1 GHz ARM, in terms of CPU performance. No doubt AAPL can mostly hide that with faster SW, relative to Windows Vista/7. But I would hate to compile anything on A4, whereas, a

Eh? AAPL isn't telling-you-to-your-face the reasons for rejecting iPhone apps (heh, such as Google Voice). Every large company attempts to coat its shallow self-serving behavior with bullshit-flavored rainbows and unicorns.

I agree with the basic argument, but for most of the 1980-2000 period it was more tax efficient to return money to investors through long term capital gains, rather than dividends. This situation will return next year if the Bush tax plan e

Rent is also cashflow negative. If anything, it's better to be a home owner in the US; you can stop paying the mortgage and probably still live in the house for 3+ months for free (or even cashflow positive if you rent part of it out).

CodeReviewer is one of the slowest/buggiest crap developer tools on Earth, largely due to its reliance on windows file sharing. It's often using 40% CPU for no reason, sometimes does not notify on new reviews, goes unresponsive every 2-3 da
