I'll try to spread the word to get a few more people on board. Once we have an idea of how big the meetup will be, we can think about date/time/location.

Count me in as well. Perhaps we should set up a group on meetup.com or somewhere similar to get things organized?

Groovy is still pretty slow, but last I checked the Groovy++ compiler can take unchanged Groovy code and compile it so that it is often as fast as Java.

My experience is similar to his. I have a business degree and worked in accounting, but decided I'd like to get back into programming after dabbling in it when I was younger. I wrote some Rails apps as side projects and put them on Github,

Even in some parts of the Java world, that problem doesn't exist anymore. The Play framework uses its own copy of the Eclipse compiler to compile everything on the fly while it is running in development mode...so as you as you save your cha

To be fair, this isn't exactly uncommon in the history of business. If I remember correctly, in Drucker's Innovation and Entrepreneurship, this exact phenomenon is discussed as a counterpoint to the first-mover advantage. It is often easier

My apologies; I must have misread something in your post. Validation can be a strange thing. Sometimes you'll make a little change that seems inconsequential, and it will make all the difference. If nothing else, look at it as a fun opportu

I think that a couple of weeks is far too soon to decide that something is a failure. It's barely even enough time to gather enough data to decide what can be adjusted and improved. An article that has been posted here before comes to mind:

Sounds like you've already got a decent portfolio in place, which is the most important part of the process. Are you near a major city where there are a lot of developer meetups? If so, have you tried going to any? Two years ago, I was a gu

I think it is natural to want to self-identify as part of a community. I also don't think it's wrong to self-identify as part of more than one community. Saying "I'm a .NET developer" or "I'm a Java developer" doesn't preclude one from simu

Interesting observation, because in cities I've observed (Ottawa and Toronto) the type of people using BBs are the opposite of the ones you've seen. Among young people I see around town, on the bus/train, etc., almost all of them have BBs.

You might want to check out Ruboto. I haven't used it yet, but it seems to allow you to do exactly what you want, i.e. write full Android apps using JRuby. I've heard there's a significant performance penalty, though. http://ruboto.org/ I
