Thanks so much for the tips! This is exactly why I did an Ask HN. I'm sure I could've searched around and found some data, but as you've pointed out, there are other things to consider. This thread helped me discover some of

Right, which is why I thought it was a fair point for the original poster of the message to bring up. And it seems like there are lots of people with an axe to grind on this topic. I'm just looking to learn more for myself, and I decid

There's a reply that's dead, but I'd like to address it. It asked: "We have 25 years or so invested in the work. Why should I make the data available to you, when your aim is to try and find something wrong with it?"

Thanks for the suggestions. And thanks for the heads up regarding coming to wrong incorrect conclusions. That's important and useful advice.

I'm a fan of Bisqwit: https://www.youtube.com/user/Bisqwit Mostly because he does fun things that are outside of the kind of programming I usually do, so it helps me broaden my horizons a bit. One of my favourites

It could be something as simple as the class names of elements on the page. WP has some defaults that are recognizable. Also, most WP pages will be loading scripts from from the wp-includes directory. There are probably others I'm over

I started with that one - I liked Isaacson's writing when I read his Steve Jobs biography, so I decided to read his Franklin bio as well. I very much enjoyed it. Afterward, I read this one: https://www.amazon.com/First-

Only tangentially related, but David Hume and Benjamin Franklin were close friends. Franklin has always stuck me as a very modern thinker for his time, too. I'd long admired both Hume and Franklin, but didn't realize they were clo

"A Mind for Numbers" is basically the book version of this course (same author). I found it quite good, and I personally found it faster and easier to learn the concepts in book form than on Coursera.

The Dr. Sbaitso program that shipped with Sound Blaster cards in the 90s covered that angle decently. :)

I feel fortunate to have seen his talks and interviews early in my career. The downside is that exposure to both of those led me to write some software in both Smalltalk and Common Lisp...which is a downside because having worked with those

To me, software development seems as tribal as politics. People tend to like and agree with those in their own tribe, and tend to see criticism of their tribe's preferred ideology as an attack on their identity. There's a lot of p

You're not the only one to observe that computing tends to be fad-driven. I enjoy Alan Kay's take on it: In the last 25 years or so, we actually got something like a pop culture, similar to what happened when television came on t

I enjoy reading old copies of PC Magazine. In one indues of the magazine from January 1987[1], there's a great, in depth overview of QuickBasic 2 starting on page 285. It includes lots of examples and sample code. After this article, t

Apologies for the slow reply. I've used Lazarus when I've had small GUI apps I wanted to make. Other times, I'll just use Turbo Pascal in DOSBox when I'm just trying to have some fun and make simple little games.
