"All numbers are doubles" is not something that any self-respecting JIT will emit. All numbers must behave like doubles, but what actually happens is code is agressively type-specialized. So, integer math is emitted, and overflow of 31-bi

With tree-style tabs (a fantastic Firefox extension) opening large amounts of tabs becomes more common because you can manage different lines of thought, and everything else sort of collapses down. I commonly have about 100 tabs open.

No, my argument is that the point is moot. If a task_struct on linux does not trigger an address space switch it is a thread. While to the kernel they are (regrettably) the same entity, they still have relevant performance characteristics o

Processes and threads are both schedulable entities in linux, which is a bit muddled, but when we talk about processes, it still implies a separate address space. That's the whole point of distinguishing them. Of course the more sane model

I mean, yes, the biggest win of lisp over other languages is that the metalanguage is the language. That is what is special about lisp. That is, when defining a macro, you are simply treating the program itself as data . Since code and d

There is a law of decreasing returns when it comes to "resources". That is to say, an engineer only makes so much, and throwing additional engineers at a single project only gains you so much, and the gains of each additional engineer are f

There's a few aspects to discuss here. Firstly, in 2006 (5 years ago), x64 chips were Core2Duos clocked at about 2.2Ghz. This is top of the line, but even a mid-level processor would be something like 1.6Ghz. A PC would probably have about

My understanding is that the kernel will be based on Android. Userland code will be rewritten basically entirely, to boot to a gecko-based UI.

Writing an OS kernel is a great experience. You will be a stronger programmer at the end. Another good resource is CMU's course on the subject: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~410/

The point is that... the patch is already in the nightly builds, and thus will certainly make it into beta and release builds (even if it requires additional patches on top). So your objection to this being vaporware is simply ridiculou
