Not sure how big the competitor is in terms of manpower, but it looks like ~40k downloads over the past 24 hours, though the reviews on implementation have been mediocre, because they're being flooded with users which took their site down.

I don't see any reports from iOS folks about this happening. It's definitely against the Android Play store TOS, though. The Play store definitely has a more laissez fair approach to apps, but spamming like this is pretty a pretty blatant v

I hate to be 'that guy', but I think most would agree that those rankings are silly. They may paint a general picture, but the number and order of the rank is not a very accurate measurement of quality. Observation: In the CS ranking, UBC i

Still, notifications would be toast. Thought most email notifications are annoying, they can be useful (or crucial).

So I installed the project and ran it with my log files and I'd like to retract my previous claim of it not being useful. You're right, I can definitely see the use here, it puts stuff into perpective quite well. It's easy to write off shin

I'm with you on that one. I wouldn't submit a site to Show HN without at least memcached sitting in front of it. And to run a legitimate service sans cache? That's just asking for trouble.

He's differentiating between prejudice and discrimination in his post. Universities discriminate against stupid people all the time, that's how their admissions work. What's not a good metric to discriminate upon, is race, because it doesn'

I imagine they use a decent amount, but not nearly as much as would be required to run a cluster of computers to mine a comparable quantity. I think with an ASIC, electricity costs are negligible compared to the output.

If you say you have to dump money into a brand new, already expensive computer right after you buy it, then that supports the argument the author is making. You shouldn't have to do that, and there are plenty of alternatives where that isn'

While freelancing is perhaps more work than the standard 9-5, it sounds like it can be more rewarding. I'm in the same realm as you, django+front end work, but it seems like a big step to take to move completely to freelancing. If you have

I've been using digitalocean for a hobby project, and am planning on launching a more serious project with them. For the past two months I've used them (so, not much experience, but some) I haven't had any issues, and they are very reasonab

Not sure about ruby, but django doesn't ship with connection pooling, so that is probably why its database performance is terrible. It could be configured to use pooling. With such a trivial request handler like the one in benchmark, only a

I agree. It's a shame legislators don't see this sort of thing in the same light as the court described in the article. Laws like this have far reaching and sinister consequences. This sort of problem is summed up nicely in the original pos

Obviously if they optimized each and every one of these benchmarks we would see different results, but it would take a massive amount of time to learn the ins and outs of each framework to the point where you can do so effectively. For one

There are a lot of variables and tweaking that can be done, and it would be nearly impossible to optimize each. Similarly, I was wondering what sort of an effect connection pooling would have, as the out of the box django distribution doesn

While I support what these groups (like pyladies) are trying to do, you're not being honest with yourself if you think no one would bat an eye at forming a men's advocacy group. It absolutely would not go over well to have a group advocatin
