Bash would really be bad idea if it is going to use bash stitching so many gnu utils for this kind of job. I once had to rewrite a bash script into awk[1] that is big enough and it made the program more readable and the total time execution

confession: plug I once wrote a diff2html script ported from bash and it was much, much faster (for obvious reasons). And awk makes it much more readable than bash script. And I could learn the language, debug, understand bugs and fix them

I think this is the right design for the scenario. It is for a dashboard and so many queries were fired for a read only operation. But, generally, I agree, it all depends on context.

Even GoF says that class and interface are part of language for C++ or Java can be a design pattern for languages like C. I think in some ways AspectJ can make the observer design pattern obsolete in Java. I have arguments against doing it
