Well, it's concerning that this is used to pass security related flags (-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE,) and it appears to have been open since 2012. I didn't think use of CPPFLAGS was that obscure, though I guess it has an unfortunately confu

When you convert audio from a lossy format to a lossy format (from YouTube's native AAC streams to MP3,) you always end up with worse quality than the original, regardless of the encoding settings. Since pretty much everything can play

IIRC --ytdl-format is passed directly to youtube-dl -f, but all other options have to be set in youtube-dl's config file.

The bit that invokes youtube-dl is a Lua plugin. It checks if the URL starts with http:// or https:// , and if so, invokes youtube-dl -J on the command line to dump JSON information about the video.

I think quvi might be dead. mpv-git actually dropped libquvi a little while back because it was buggy and development was inactive. It's been replaced with a youtube-dl based downloader, so in mpv-git, this would invoke youtube-dl to g

Because it interprets video IDs that start with a dash as short options? This should be better: youtube-dl -x --audio-format mp3 -- -fCtvurGDD8

The problem is, only one person has to figure out how to build it, then if it's real free and open source software, they're legally allowed to distribute their own unofficial builds over the internet. The original XChat developer

Nope, the UI got an update too. It renders at high-DPI on Windows. Chrome on a high-DPI machine looks exactly the same as on a low-DPI machine, except sharper. It used to be plagued with issues, but I'm fairly sure they're all gon

Probably not. From the looks of it, GoW is just a mashup of MSYS and MinGW compiled binaries, much like msysGit except without Git.

The problem isn't with disk IO as much as it's with speed of the stat() syscall. IIRC Cygwin stat() is backed by three different NT syscalls, so it's slow because it requires three transitions to kernel mode, where Linux only

You shouldn't have to build SFML from source. The blog post says that CLion supports Cygwin and MinGW toolchains on Windows and SFML provides MinGW binaries, so you should be fine there. As I think the parent post was trying to explain

This looks nice. From the layout of some of the menus, it seems like it was written by fans of OllyDbg, maybe because OllyDbg still has no 64-bit support. OllyDbg is great, so hopefully I can get some use out of this tool as well.

This is true. I've been using it for a while, but it's great to see it switched on by default. Hopefully more designers will be able to use web fonts without having to worry about how it looks in Chrome/Windows (probably the

Linux kernel uses tabs. I'm a fan of kernel-style, so I use it in my personal projects as well. It seems common in C projects, anyway. https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/CodingStyle

Windows has a number of native compilers: MSVC, MinGW GCC, Clang, icc, Pelles C, Embarcadero C++Builder etc. Nothing makes MSVC special, except that it happens to be from the same vendor as the operating system. MinGW GCC is free software,

I wish I knew why so many Windows devs hate Cygwin. It has some pretty poor default settings, but you can change your .bashrc just like on Linux, or ditch the whole thing and use zsh instead, which works out of the box with oh-my-zsh (it lo

The discussion in the comments is interesting. MinGW, the compiler for VLC, LibreOffice and most other FOSS projects on Windows does exactly what Raymond says not to do. In fact, the entire purpose of MinGW is to make GCC able to target msv
