Entity resolution/record linkage/deduplication is an oddly specialized domain of knowledge given that it's such a common problem. I put together a page of resources a while back if anyone is interested: https://git

I don't like efficiency as a concept -- it hides too much. As a ratio of output over input, it can be used to say all kinds of things (we pay our employees less, I spent less time with my family, etc) behind a veneer of merit or techno

This is a great idea! It's very tech centric, though (at least judging from your directory).

This is really cool. I built https://thicket.io a while ago, which had related goals but which System really puts to shame. Thicket took a simpler approach to graphing knowledge, so it's fascinating to see how you've s

As somebody who recently spent two weekends trying to figure out a self hosted photo solution that actually for my needs and was easy to install, this looks fantastic. (I ended up using PhotoView, which works fine, but this looks like it mi

Now that I think about it it may have been that there was info in foobar's media library database that wasn't supported, not necessarily id3 tags. Play count and last played date are some I'm partial to that I couldn't g

I've been using Dendron since it last showed up here and it's worked pretty well for a large writing project. My main complaint is more of a VS Code issue -- I can't figure out how to soft-wrap lines in a way that allows for

This is basically what I'm doing except I hate plain text editing on a phone touchscreen, so I switched to .org for notes and use orgzly on my phone (which provides a much nicer interface for navigation around files and for quick data

Agreed. This looks like something I will be coming back to. Rules of thumb, recommendations, and reasons for their recommendations -- I'm in heaven. Too few resources hit the sweet spot between introduction and arcana.

I've started having problems with trigger finger (can't bend fingers in to make a fist) in both my right and left hands. Has anyone fixed this sort of problem with a new keyboard/mouse? I always hear about ergonomics in relat

Not the OP but I'm happy to defend WYSIWIG editors. Things like font size and bold and italics exist for a reason. Markdown tables are extremely clunky. Inline images (or pretty equations) are important for many types of writing. Bulle

Very cool! While the colors serve an obvious purpose, I initially viewed the page in grayscale and I think the maps are even more beautiful that way.

You have built up a terrifying straw man based on a video you admit you didn't even watch. You're right that we should put less emotional stake in our code--the video actually lays some healthy ways to do this. More generally, it&

If sequential and random reads are mostly the same on SSDs, does that make the distinction between columnar and row-based databases/data storage less important?

Looks really nice. I built a similar site a few years back with an economics/policy/debate focus ( https://thicket.io ) but gave up/burned out after not getting any users and struggling to manage the data backend.

On my new phone (Android 10) foobar2000 can't play tracks without stuttering. Haven't found a great replacement yet, but... that's one reason not to use it.

It's not about being flashy. Those Windows commands are hidden precisely because they are for power users and Microsoft presumably thinks that average users don't want or need them. Which is a whole different can of worms.

De-DRM for Kobo works great. It's basically the same as Kindle, there is just another plugin or two to install. Books are usually a bit more expensive. However, it looks like Walmart actually owns Rakuten now, so it's not like you

Calls for nuance are missing the point. Nuance is exactly what we need less of, nuance is the trees that hide the forest. Does Yellen have some professional ethics that guard against her acting in a way that overly favors businesses that ha
