I am increasingly seeing "software" used as a discrete noun, rather than as a continuous noun or an adjective, as in this line from the article: "The terminal — a software officially named Bloomberg Professional — is still a

I have occasionally taken Route 301 south from the Washington DC area (I live just a few miles from it in Maryland). It's a nice change of pace from I-95. The intersection of I-95 South and the Washington Beltway is huge, complex thing

It was remarkably difficult to dig up any specifics on this. But I finally found the linked PDF below. It says this about the DMS-R: "Another example is EADS DMS-R, a computer board based on ERC32 (Atmel TSC695) processor, and a fault-

I knew Phil slightly when I was at the University of Maryland. I think we had a physics class together. I remember him as being quite smart. I hope he is well and happy.

Yes, I understand that. I’m just confused by the author’s use of BOTH the L and the £ together, on the same line.

Fascinating list, but the notation is confusing in places. The pound sterling is denoted by an L: 1 pound (L) = 20 shillings (s) in the introduction, but in the text both the L and the £ are used, sometimes in the same line!

Some high-end CG applications do not work acceptably under nouveau. If I must use those applications for my job, and thus must use the proprietary Nvidia driver, then I will. It is NOT my choice at that point, I am effectively forced into i

I was sad to see that in the release notes, I had not heard. I remember Kurt from the Old Days, when I went to some open houses at UUNET and attended Usenix conferences.

Back in the pre-web days, we used to get software via ftp, usually as source code tar balls, from any of several well-known archive sites. One I remember was labrea.stanford.edu. Yes, it was a tar pit...

A friend and I had been talking about visiting NRAO/Green Bank for some years and in 2006 we finally decided on a weekend. When I went to look up some information on visiting, I discovered we had unknowingly picked their 50th anniversa

I visited Iceland two years ago and loved it. It was a short visit and I did the usual tourist things, like the Golden Circle tour. I would like to go again and see other parts of the country, outside the basic tourist areas. A friend drove

That's a fascinating analysis. The least credible part of it to me is the CIA connection. It's easy to say that some intelligence agency or another is part of some scheme, very difficult to prove, and impossible to disprove. I cou
