I was diagnosed with ADHD in my fifties! I'd known I likely had it for some years, but the formal diagnosis came late. Alas, none of the meds I tried worked, or they had unacceptable side-effects. So I mostly rely on monitoring my own

Exactly. It was way too early, in 1993, to be doing that sort of thing in Post. Much cheaper to do it on set.

The Univac 1100 computers I used in college used the Fieldata character set. I only recently learned that Fieldata was the name of a whole program of the US Military in the late 1950s to create a standard for military and battlefield inform

Interesting article but the author needs to learn the difference between systemic and systematic. This is also wrong: > That’s why the shipbuilders bragged that the Titanic was unsinkable. Instead, systematic design error let water spill

Back in my BSD-on-a-VAX days, I once typed grep string * > out and wondered why it was taking so long. The shell (probably csh) had created the file "out" before it expanded the *, so my grep command was forever findin

This has been out for some years. I played with it a bit when it was first released and it was definitely a fun trip down memory lane. I'm sorry that the author hasn't continued to update it, it still had some rough edges, but I d

A friend suggested that they'll find the name Acme on it and when it's removed there'll be a very flat coyote under it. (American cartoon reference.)

Very few of my friends in same-sex marriages exchanged diamonds, with many forgoing any sort of engagement ring. Maybe we get to be on the vanguard of style and custom again and start an anti-diamond engagement ring trend.

I noticed that. Audio has to come from the HDMI connection or from Bluetooth, either of which will produce better sound than the standard Pi audio jack. I imagine they see this being used with a TV, much like the old classic 8-bit consoles.

Theme parks paint the exteriors of buildings housing large rides and theaters in "go-away gray" or "go-away green" so that the public generally doesn't notice them.

There is a tendency at some places to not rip out old cables when putting in new. I have seen in some buildings at NASA Goddard a few runs of old 10Base5 cable with vampire taps still in place. I should grab one as a souvenir of the old day

Nice! Too bad they don’t include Hungarian. I’d like to see if they included the name my Hungarian friends gave their daughter. They picked Edith/Edit. The Hungarian version is pronounced ED-eet, which is pretty different from EE-dith,

I think the issue is that programmers want a type "pointer to int", for example, but C doesn't directly provide that type. It has a type, int, with a modifier (asterisk) that can be applied to a declarator to make it a poin

Interesting observation. I've never taken the time to try to retrain myself to use a mouse in natural mode. This is in part due to the fact that I am a Linux system administrator and I am often working on systems that aren't mine.
