This is beautiful. I hope he posts videos. It reminds me of the old electronics of my childhood; radios and TV sets that had point-to-point wiring on terminal strips. No circuit boards! But they were never this beautiful.

As a general rule, I get really annoyed when I come across a web page and I can't tell how old it is, especially if it is information that is likely to age rapidly. I don't care if putting a date on the page makes it less "e

Nice! I though for a minute about using find, but I didn't know about those options to stat, and I just punted and used ls. I need to study the stat man page, apparently.

As others have noted, awk is great for one-liners. Just minutes ago, I wanted to find out what users and groups own all of the files within a certain deep directory tree (on linux). I did this: $ ls -lR | awk '{ print $3, $4 }'

Interesting, I liked it a lot. I especially liked the actress playing the lead role. I'm told the second season wasn't as good, but I'll probably watch it on Netflix like I did the first. It would be nice to see a series set

I keep hoping that someone will release an HFR film that is not also in 3D. I saw an extensive demo of HFR at Siggraph a few years back and it was amazing. HFR can be so crisp and clear that you don't even NEED 3d. I have several frien

Lots of interesting discussion here about space exploration, but I'd like to add a personal note. I grew up in Huntsville, Alabama, during the 60s, NASA's glory years. Huntsville is home to Marshall Space Flight Center, where my f

Interesting. The Micro Center is Rockville, Maryland isn't bad. I don't do too much electronics hacking, but I've gotten into the Arduino and Raspberry Pi maker stuff and they have a good selection that is sometimes cheaper

When I was very young, the Sears Toy Catalog was my Book of Wonders. Then, in my teens, it was the Radio Shack catalog. Now, I guess, it's the Newegg deals page. Things change. I rarely go into a Radio Shack these days, but as other

I just saw some ENIAC panels at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA and I'm hoping to visit the Moore School of Engineering in Philadelphia soon to see the parts they have. Now I'll have to visit Oklahoma and see the

For modern wide monitors, I prefer 16:10, or 2560x1600. On my linux system at home I have two 1600x1200 monitors and I like that arrangement for coding. Having lots of vertical space for tall editor windows is a Good Thing. This square mon

I plan to try out PC-BSD (which is basically FreeBSD with all the desktop GUI stuff set up for you) when they get their 10.1 version out. I've been told by actual FreeBSD folks that it's the least painful way to get into FreeBSD.

With apologies to uselessdguy, I have to agree that the name is not an asset. I have NO problem with clever names, but sometimes they are a bit too much. For example, I always though that Lesstif (a clone of Motif) was a silly, off-putting

I believe, based on descriptions of the prototype, that it will be 800 x 480. That seems rather small, but they want to hit a price point (< $70), consistent with their primary mission of providing an affordable educational system.

I agree this probably looks better in theory than it does in practice. As far as long function declarations go, it sure would be nice to go back to declaring multiple arguments of the same type without repeating the type: int myfunc(fl

I've often thought that the best way to get access to the richness of Unicode would be a drawing pad, perhaps as part of the keyboard, or as an on-screen area, for use with a mouse. Character maps just seem clumsy to me. For fun, I tri

I learned about the Beale ciphers in the 80s and wrote a simple program to try deciphering ciphers one and three using a given key text. I think it's probably a hoax, but the codes are fun to play around with.

But which behavior is correct? On Ubuntu, ls is redefined, but isn't that what a shell function is supposed to do? If Red Hat "fixed" this, then haven't they disabled a feature? Sorry, not trying to be obtuse...

I've spent much of my professional career at NASA Goddard and I'd have to agree with this for the most part. My former group worked well with a group at Ames, but my current group pissed off JPL by taking some work they wanted.
