NASA's Mars Polar Impacter, er, Lander, also shut off it's descent engine too early, believing it was on the ground, and slammed into Mars. This stuff is hard. The Wikipedia entry gives the details: https://en.wikipedia

What a mess. I wouldn't want to be in Samsung quality control right now. In what has to be the nerdiest humor I've ever come up with, I suggested to some astronomer friends here at NASA that this Samsung Galaxy line be rebranded t

All of the 10Gbit stuff I'm aware of here at Goddard is over fibre. I assume it's single mode, but that isn't really my area of expertise. I mentioned Cat 6a above because I know that some projects here are using it, I didn&#

Running Cat6a through the older buildings here at NASA Goddard can be a nightmare. I can see us using this, especially for buildings that are planned for replacement down the road. And let's not talk about getting funding for Cat 6a up

This. My sister used to read "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" to her students and that's how I heard of it. We loved it and were furious at the film for completely inverting the author's message. In the book, Mrs. Fris

This is what I find ridiculous. Is there any real value in NOT hardwiring the camera power to the LED? Consumers should demand that the camera light not be under software control and that it always reflect the true power state of the camera

Exactly! I would be a terrible manager and I have no entrepreneurial instincts at all. I'm way over 40 and I'm one layoff away from involuntary retirement. I suppose I could hook up with someone who was an entrepreneur, but there&

I first heard about a project, at Microsoft, I think, about twenty years ago that used recordings of a specific person's voice as the basis for a synthetic voice. In that work, the person had to record a set of utterances that covered

Those horrid alt-buffer init and exit strings in terminfo and termcap are the bane of my existence. I almost never want that behavior, particularly when I've got a relevant section of a man page on the screen and want it to STAY THERE

I think they are making a big mistake tying high frame rate to 3D. The only way to see the Hobbit films in HFR was the 3D versions. But HFR all by itself gives an almost 3D realism to film, something I noticed when I saw Douglas Trumbull&#x
