is there still an argument that can be made in favor of doing your UI on the server side? Ability to link to documents, bookmark, meaningfully use history and save pages to the disk for offline use. Ability of the users to customize stand

The important thing is that client-side rendering stays on the client and doesn't need to go back to the server. It still needs to go back to the server to fetch new data. And it's not like rendering on the client side is instant and free

Part of what I mean is that Facebook design implies that you need to friend someone to interact with them on a persistent basis. And neither me, nor anyone I know would "friend" a person just because they've had some interaction with that p

Very similar to my thoughts. Plus, I have some other experiences to compare to, and FB doesn't come out very well in those comparisons. Some websites allow you meet new people and to get to know them better over the years. You'd think "soci

I see what you're saying about deleting the deletion page. It's an interesting point. Having separate URLs for GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, etc. on the same logical entity breaks the connection between those operations. However, I still don't se

In practice, this is a non-issue. Instead of thinking of your routers as "the interface" and your controllers as "implementation" you can think of the controllers as the interface and everything else as "implementation". If you're concerned

Again, you can have a URL like http://example.com?Articles.delete.1 and only accept DELETE requests. (However, I'm speaking about web applications, rather than services. This URL would be useless, since browsers don't support form-based D

Good point. I think a lot of people who build commercial software have rather limited choice in which tools they use. They can choose how to use those tools and what to advocate publicly. If the hype about something forces me to use deficie

I can see the benefits in respecting request method semantics, but you can do that while using query strings, can't you? If someone calls http://example.com/?Bla.delete.1 with GET, you can just return 405 and do nothing.

"Don't use query parameters to alter state" "Don't fall into RPC with your URIs" I can see the benefit of doing some of the things on the list, but I never understood what's the motivation behind these two suggestions. What are the practi

There is lots of exciting stuff going on (DbC and PEX for C#, for example), but none of it is exactly in the mainstream. My personal peeve is not that there is too much abstraction, but the fact that people seem to gladly settle for mediocr

The menu completely fails to work without JavaScript. Is it really that difficult to design things properly and provide a graceful fallback?

People generally seriously underestimate the power of modern hardware. They also often underestimate the bloat of modern software. The difference in page generation times between WordPress and some minimalistic CMS can be in the order of

TLDs should help to identify the type of organization that has control of the domain, not some arbitrary thing about the (hypothetical) website. Why people are making this so difficult?

Well, personally I wouldn't use it, because it doesn't look idiomatic enough. PHP CMSes had package managers for years. It wouldn't hurt to look at them and learn what they did right and wrong before cloning Ruby/CPAN/NPM solutions.

I don't think it's a matter of programmers being productive per se. The greatest benefits of command line are the ability to easily store, share and reproduce actions. It's just text. You don't need screenshots to explain something, and eve

ORMs aren't implemented in the database, so it's less of an "inner" and more of a "parallel" platform. I think this is an important distinction, since one of the reasons people use ORMs in the first place is better integration with the prog

Agree. A lot of the things I've learned in AI class are pretty darn simple, once explained properly. So far all this knowledge has been hidden behind jargon and badly defined notations. IMO, the guys at Stanford are liberating it. Moreover,

Most of us are too concerned (or straight up scared) of the JavaScript/HTML5 revolution that we can't see what is possible right now. What I see in practice is the exact opposite. Everyone writing about "what is possible" with JavaScript
