Watched the whole thing, got really excited (as I always pre-rinse) and then discovered that my dishwasher doesn't have a pre-wash basin. More research is needed, I suppose, to convince me to move away from rinsing (which I would love,

Have you worked at a FAANG? I'm sure it depends on company/team, but it was pretty common for externally hired senior engineers to struggle (and sometimes flame out) due to consistently high and enforced expectations, different mo

When so many companies focus on hiring senior engineers, we shouldn't be surprised that junior engineers are optimizing for the title. I did the same, negotiating a senior title with like three years of experience. It's silly, thi

Not sure which FAANG this is, but when I was at FB, uplevels on transfers were not a thing, regardless of manager promises. Downlevels were, if you were switching functions.

The title rollercoaster was a great opportunity to disassociate my worth from my title. My last three jobs went something like this: started as Senior Engineer -> left as a Director; started as Manager -> left as Senior Manager; start

The other comments are all correct, but they didn't address your last point. Yes, you will indeed pay taxes on the $1M value, and yeah, high property taxes is definitely something to plan for when buying property in California. The kic

Facebook is absolutely well-known for its terrible work-life balance, borne out of high expectations and a high percentage of overachievers.

As a fellow (ex)FBer who absolutely abhorred PSC, I applaud you, sir. As a former manager at said company, I would absolutely hate you for making my PSC hell-period even more hellish, as I would still be on the hook for delivering your pack

Is this true though? In my cohort of early-ish employees that went through a modest IPO, there was definitely some discussion of QSBS in an ex-employee group. That's where I even found out about it, in fact. Buying options (years after

To be clear, this is just for the state tax exclusion. The 20% capital gains exclusion on federal taxes is applicable in all states.

Depends on your definition of valuable, I suppose. Directors and equivalent ICs (L8 / Principal level) or above can and do get over $1M in annual compensation even before appreciation. At F/G anyways.

I don't mean to pile on, please take this as advice from someone who has been in engineering management for quite some years... You seem to have some preconceived notions about managing people (and engineers specifically) that will, fr

This has nothing to do with class, similar to how declining a junior engineer for an architect role is not classist. A VP Engineering role is a senior management position, and being a fantastic programmer is not a reasonable transition poin

I've never thought of 10x engineers as someone who can crank out 10x amount of code. Influencing others to accomplish larger goals is the best way to scale yourself reliably. And then there are the rare unicorns who can do both, e.g. J
