ADHD can make it hard to sustain attention while reading. I tend to also zone out when reading something even slightly uninteresting or in this case something (eg a Rust program) too dense.

I've actually never gotten a job via my network (besides an "internship" driving a forklift in a warehouse), and have worked at startups and big tech companies just from applying on the website. I wouldn't discount it!

That is a major problem in interviewing. Everyone has their own set of internal guidelines! I have worked on teams trying to improve our interviewing process, and one key goal was aligning everyone in exactly what technical and personal att

Eden definitely works better on a dev server and sucks on a laptop, especially arm based mac's (it's slowly getting better but still requires occasional reboots). +1 on the coding tools being great

Sense is much less upfront to install - it is able to detect most large loads just by looking at the overall current and voltage going into the house via disagregation. It works pretty well!

I don't think what you described is a promotion? M1 = IC6, M2 = IC7, etc as you said. As far as the number of directors and VPs, sure there are probably more but I would describe that more as "it is easier to get promoted as a ma

It's called "cost of market" at my company. Cost of market doesn't necessarily equal cost of living.. for example I make about 20% less in the Midwest than I would in New York or SF, but still way more than if I worked i

I don't think anyone is blind to how expensive SF real estate is?? I mean at least every single person I know who lives there talks about it!

What I recommend, and plan on doing unless I just retire early outright, is to downshift to a less stressful software job. I've worked at quite a few places where I was bored and the pay was low. This was a problem early in my career

Be careful with the flight attendant career - good routes are seniority based, you are only on the clock during flights, and the pay is not great. I think it's one of those things that sounds more glamorous than it is (at least for a

This sounds like fan fiction. I do my best work distraction free. Seeing expensive cars... have you met engineers? We are the biggest collection of cheapasses on the planet!

This is so true. I have used a quest pro to watch YouTube and Netflix, and it's a great experience. My house weirdly has no good place for a TV, but with VR it's a much more immersive experience. Just need to get comfort and batte

I recently stepped on my framework laptop and crunched the LCD screen. Luckily I was able to purchase a new lid (got an improved lighter and stiffer lid!) And new screen (unfortunately the matte option was out of stock). 45 minutes later I

I wasn't trying to make any larger point about income inequality - just saying that employer matches do not contribute to your individual 401k limits :)

This just is another example to me how absurd it is to use crypto as a practical currency. There is no recourse for compromising your private key, and no way to know for sure that only you have a private key.

The 401k limit doesn't include money your employers match - so if they contribute $10k you can still put in $22.5k (2023)

While that is true, I think it's also important to focus on the $100k ticket items and not worry about the $4 things in life. Getting a promotion has impacted my life more than any amount of frugality has. Also investing in low cost in

Getting a second mortgage is a big hassle and cost, especially if you don't have an income. You can get an asset backed mortgage but those are less common and can have higher rates. A HELOC is certainly easier but there's no guara
