Thanks for posting this. I too am alarmed at the HN community's response. It is surprising how such strong talent can feel so powerless- you'd think hackers would be less susceptible to giving up given that we can change things with our ba

This is right. I'm shocked at the "suicide apologists" in this thread.

Fascinating. Also not to be ignored: the psychological blowback from the parents' stress and anxiety. Anyone who has dogs or rides horses can tell you - if you're confident and focused, the animal is too. If you're skittish, scared, overly

It embarrasses me how ego- and emotion-driven European regulators are. The title of this post, the quotes from the commissioner.. These guys see themselves not as inspectors but practically as clergymen. I don't know if its just me, but whi

A bit unfortunate. FS grew too far too fast and too much at the whims of her VCs. The product now stands at an amorphous juncture between yelp, path, and Facebook, confusing users. I still believe strongly in the need for a mobile foursquar

Cool proposition but because of your onerous terms you are self selecting for bottom barrel. In startups (where there is a power law distribution of outcomes) it would be much preferable to offer more generous terms and simply be more picky

Nice article, great recommendations. Proper instrumentation and aggregate metrics are essential, but its also impt to know the user on an individual basis- intercom is the only one on this list designed to help do that. If I was writing thi

im afraid its not this easy. continuing your stock exchange analogy, trading volume at the individual stock level will be too sparse and unevenly distributed to make an unassisted exchange workable except at massive unprecedented scale (whi

Samsung is frequently referred to as "the only android carrier that makes any money". One wonders whether such Apple-sque upgrade forcing has contributed to their financial success.

I see this as a positive, not at all a negative. Programming is rare in that the field lends itself very well to creative destruction / natural competition / evolution, for many of the reasons you describe. The process is chaotic on an indi

Here's the thing- if it's based on location, social data, influence, hair color, none of that is illegal. Two things are illegal: 1) discrimination in the -ism sense of the word, and 2) price discrimination based on proximity to competitors

You don't see the contradiction in your post? Startups arent fresh air and flowers, the ones that succeed are the ones that power through the tough times for uncertain reward. You need to love the thrill of the risk in and of itself.
