I think people will tend to argue two points: 1) Debt isn't bad in itself, running a deficit isn't bad in itself. (though they can be bad in some situations!) 2) The US is in the position to "fix" the debt problem in a l

Can you explain how this will work when the fed may have to raise rates to combat inflation?

Me too, would be good for sure. For the record, I don't have anything against leveling deficits if that's the goal.

What is your alternative solution? Something like weighting the tariffs based on US production? What's the calculation using this method?

This is a fine idea, but having the cash during a recession to buy stocks is not always easy.

It is weird that HN isn't talking about tariffs at all - since this is probably the biggest economic mixup since COVID.

I 100% agree with you, but the Fed is independent and they only have a few levers to pull. They don't make policy and they go out of their way to not comment on policy. They say they are apolitical (though of course they are 100% pro-e

America is a massive consumer, so it will likely impact other countries, too. I've been seeing your perspective a lot lately online - that this will somehow cancel income tax. Where is that coming from? I haven't heard a single th

I think it is remarkable to see this on the front page but nothing about current markets or tariffs. ???

I don't agree with high CEO pay, but in the general case even with very-well paid CEOs, if you took their salary and divided it out to the other employees entirely it isn't that much. Apple for example, Tim Cook's salary is e

For the market's aren't the economy crowd: I agree, and even to the extent it does say something about the economy, it is noisy and often inaccurate. However, there are a few counter arguments. When markets really tank, it does im

VAT is like a sales-tax but along the supply chain (with credits) - so it's like a complicated sales-tax. If you want to use that for argument, you should include US sales taxes in the calculation too. Which could be fair, I guess.

Yeah, I think best way is to look at the total tariffs collected by the EU on US goods - about $3.3b USD in 2023 - compared to imports ~$370b USD in 2023. So like, 1%.

It is how it works in all scenarios, though. Higher rates usually cause people to spend a little less which is a reduction in demand.

I think the dollar is around 50% of foreign trade - but anyway I am not arguing against that, I'm saying that it isn't related to trade deficits.

I really don't think that HN lets dissenting opinions thrive (well, not anything that is truly controversial but not clearly hateful). That may feel cozy but it's not a reflection of anything pure or good, imo.

Yeah, agreed - but I do think using vue, react, whatever on certain pages really has its benefits. Sometimes a UI really is improved by using features that Vue makes really easy to implement. Of course it's possible without Vue - but y
