Browser APIs to block content are fairly simple. There's no reason to use a huge piece of software if you just want to block some urls. Ad blockers have their own issues, including trust about maintainers intentions.

True, iOS and Android have fairly decent native render engines. Other technologies cited are very limited, not even close to what current web technologies offer.
