What a terrible headline and article. TL;DR: face-recognition AIs trained on predominantly white faces aren't as able to reliably detect a dark-skinned face. When updated with a more mixed training set, the success rate rises.

Unless my reading comprehension has taken a serious dive this morning, all the sources NationMaster lists appear to be a good 5 to 10 years out of date. In other words, that would exclude information about crimes since the recent demographi

'Dockless' bikes have recently made a large appearance in London, too. They're suddenly everywhere, little orange ones. I'm not sure if it's the same company but it's the exactly the same principle. I'm qu

Haha, I fondly remember this game. If I recall correctly, this was (is?) in the Debian repos about 4 or so years ago. Shame to hear it's been abandoned these days!

I've never seen such a distinct pattern for display burn-in. What monitor do you use? That's quite interesting.

Okay, so this is not a joke and apparently not an advert either. A dubious claim. I'm so confused. Paris Hilton must be close to the last celebrity on earth I would have thought to endorse a coin sale. Who exactly is the audience, here

I'm glad to see that HGST have the lowest failure rates across the board for the 3rd(?) year in a row. I was concerned they'd lose their place when they were bought by Western Digital.

Such an extraordinarily clickbait headline. I'm saddened that mainstream media has fallen to such lows. Anyway, the bots started speaking "shorthand English" (gibberish) to each other -- which probably wasn't very useful

Both Facebook and Google have actively influenced political events. >[..] on election day in 2010, Facebook sent ‘go out and vote’ reminders to more than 60 million of its users. The reminders caused about 340,000 people to vote who othe

I've never seen an autonomous vehicle drive with traffic before, let alone keep pace. Perhaps I simply haven't been keeping up with the latest advances in the technology, but this looks very cool. It's mentioned in the video

This is related to the Chrome caching update; as discussed here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13492483 Two wholly different strategies, which has ultimately split how the browsers handle caching.

Has anybody managed to dig to the bottom of the D-Wave marketing hype? As far as I knew, they've yet to actually produce results of a quantum effect. And yet, Google invested in them. Does anybody have any more on this? Am I just way b
