If you trust your partner, encourage them to be stricter with you and to further restrict access to your device. Create a new Apple ID that only they have access to and reset your phone to that ID, then lock it down again. You can also go f

Sure thing! Basically I set out to use Stripe's built-in tools as much as possible, rather than duplicating the state on our side - storing partial data in your own DB is one of the biggest pain points of subscription systems in my exp

Agreed. Elixir/BEAM gives you some really interesting new ways of solving problems. A couple of years ago I built a subscription system that interacted with Stripe that only kept the state whilst a user was interacting with the system

Ever since I heard about Fly I was really keen to try out something using Elixir. I've been severely lacking in ideas that I can complete within two weeks though (my maximum attention span)! This was well-timed for me - nice to have a

The way I learnt a lot myself was to run applications with little budget, e.g. running them on anaemic servers with few resources. When you have no option but to improve performance, because the alternative is too expensive, it gives you a

Lots of typical anti-ruby grumbling in this so I'll just say; this looks awesome and I'm excited to give it a try. I still love programming in Ruby, and there's no reason at all why a game written in Ruby couldn't be per

Yeah I thought it might be resonance between two drives moving similarly in a mirrored pair, so swapped the drive order around, but that made no difference either. I've used primarily WD drives for years but I think my next pair will b

Using ZFS myself and lots of reports of btrfs having the same issue on the WD thread. My two 8TB Gold drives are a mirrored pair alongside another mirrored 4TB pair of WD Reds from a few years back, which don't exhibit the same issue.

Yeah I have a 2' thick stone wall in the centre of my house (old exterior wall). I have an AP on either side of it as they penetrate the ceilings/floors above fine, but nothing is getting through that wall and maintaing good signa

I've tried twice to learn Japanese and I consistently get stuck on kanji. The spoken language is actually really intuitive in a lot of ways, and hiragana/katakana fit easily into my brain, but kanji, with the multiple and inconsis

Nice article. rsync.net is one part of my personal computing setup that I never even think twice about. It's simple and it works, and that clearly applies to the infrastructure too. I use ZFS locally and it has made managing my own dat

This is basically what I did. I ended up trapped in a half-management-but-no-real-authority-but-also-we-need-you-as-an-engineer role. It's an easy place to accidentally find yourself when the managers above you aren't technical en

Thank you for disagreeing in a reasonable manner. Where I feel Apple fall short is in trying to take away “excess information”, where honestly they often succeed, they end up with some very confusing interfaces. And while this might make it

I tend to agree. I do still use an iPad, despite its faults, as I prefer it in a tablet form. I’m a Linux user and I forget how many awkward things I do naturally now that are utterly bewildering to new users. I think Apple’s biggest proble

Yeah this is the issue. Is it a backup or is it sync? It's not like "left for backups, right for sync", it's just on or off for "iCloud". Which isn't even consistent across apps.

You delete an entire conversation in iMessage by swiping to the left and then tapping a button on the left, FYI. Which is easily fumbleable, or possible to trigger with a wet screen, and is what happened to my girlfriend.

That's part of the sync step. Basically it stores the "current" state and will mirror that to all devices. I would class a backup differently. Say someone grabs your phone and deletes your conversations (or you accidentally s

But the headline doesn't say it's a comparative analysis of UX? It's a comparison of an example of current Apple UX with their prior reputation, if anything. Also, this isn't a forum for needlessly aggressive remarks.

Haha I'm now quite disappointed the estate agent didn't try to advertise it as a safety feature. I did once see a house listed as having "conveniant access to the motorway for commuting". It was actually directly underne
