Yeah you're basically right on the nose with that assessment. The author attempted to use WSL like their mac and had a bad time with it, aside from the text rendering and high DPI stuff that isn't quite as polished on Windows.

Yeah, just that the base 2014 Mac Mini was being sold $500 new up until the point in 2018 when the new model came out. Even by 2016 and 2017 standards, 4GB 1600MHz DDR3 and 500GB 5400rpm spinning disk is abysmal. I would expect the base mod

I wasn't a slacker until I took a computer graphics class that consumed more of my time than my other 4 classes combined, and I still failed it on a technicality (out for a job interview the day partners were assigned for the final pro

I've felt this pain too. 2 years ago I bought a Mac mini (2014 model) off eBay for $340 mainly as a build machine for iOS binaries. It was the lowest end model which had a 5400rpm HDD in it and 4GB of RAM. It took ~3 minutes to get to

My federal loans from a few years ago ranged from 3.25% to 6.7%. My fiance had to stay an extra semester, which means she had to get a private loan for it. ~9% fixed. My school wouldn't give anyone extra aid even if you went in in pers

As a single data point, I'm 25, have a bachelors degree, engaged, no kids (we adopted a dog a few months ago, though), on my third job and third apartment. I contribute to my 401k up to the match and tuck away a little extra in a Roth

My fiance works for a major ISP in the US. She started in sales while we were living in NY, but I got a really good offer for a gamedev position in CA and we both moved across country. She transferred her position to be a dispatcher for tec

I have mixed feelings about this - on the one hand, it's giving an incentive to working on the "boring" stuff that devs prefer not to do, on the other hand, it's something that can be gamed and result in poorer code qual

I spent far too long looking for a second USB charging block for my phone. The first page is full of < $5 chargers, none of them from a brand I'd heard of before, with mostly 5 star reviews from bots and a few 1 star reviews of &quo

Once you get past a certain point of developing a complex game in Unity, one of the optimization techniques is to keep runtime allocations at 0 bytes in order to prevent a GC pause from ever happening. This was a huge pain back when Unity w

Google does give you the option of using a Chromebook with a really basic text editor on it, but it's the same whiteboard problems they want you to solve. There just isn't the friction of having to hand write code on a whiteboard.

My bet is on there being less friction at the onset. How quickly can you get a cross-platform prototype up as a web app vs Qt? I'd also wager there are more C++ pitfalls than JS pitfalls (or at least the JS ones are less severe/ob

That's certainly part of it, but I also think part of it is due to the economics of running a restaurant. Margins are getting thinner and thinner as people don't want to pay more for the same food (despite this being how inflation

At the core of the issue, yeah, they just need to publish the same driver with a different signature. It looks like their auto-updater used the same cert though, so they can't distribute it as a normal update. They're probably fig

This is why setting up a statement of work contract at the beginning of the project is important. It allows you to defer ballooning ideas off until after the original task is done, and scope it out separately. I say this having done a decen

Having gone through this process, this is all excellent advice. I would add that if your university has a business school, see what resources they offer student entrepreneurs. In our case, RPI has an excellent business school with staff tha

Yeah this is pretty much what I was thinking. There will still be plenty of companies that will install the government-mandated malware with glee (or raise prices by $20), but I think there would be enough pushback from a few large companie

Vulkan is designed for modern GPUs, not the other way around. You would only have to wait for GPU vendors to write a new driver for their existing cards. NVIDIA, AMD, and a bunch of other large players are part of the Khronos Group designin
