Depends. In this case the engine is just a blob of code that you clone, and you modify it in order to make your game. You'd have to comply by the rules of the GPL.

People in their early 20's don't even know Half-Life (released at the end of 1998, over 20 years ago now), let alone Quake. We're definitely getting old!

Seems to me like we've gone too far down the "add more schooling" solution to a changing world. This approach tries to anticipate what will be in demand for the 40-50 years after these kids graduate from high school and enter

Back in 2007 I thought it was silly that SBCL (and SmallTalk too) distributed its applications as "images". Seems they've been re-invented today as "containers", which are suddenly an amazing idea.

It's proof by assertion. Just repeat the same thing over and over, eventually it will be true. It's a real thing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proof_by_assertion

Based on my anecdotal experience, it would depend entirely on you: your experience, your reputation, and your negotiating ability. If you're a top senior engineer or a celebrity like Tim Bray ( https://www.tbray.org/ongo

Agreed. I moved from Montreal to SF a few years back and although my rent tripled, so did my income. The net result is much more savings than I would have gotten if I had stayed in Canada. If you're a saver/investor then it makes

You lost me at "commute via car". Toronto has a reputation for some of the worst traffic in North America. It might be cheaper to live that far away, but the cost in quality of life + hours commuting isn't worth the trade. In

Google is actually C++ centric - every other language is a bit of a "second class citizen" when interacting with infrastructure. Go is still new and Google is "old", so there is surprisingly little Go code at Google - it

You're right, it is dependent on your perspective. Go is intended to be unsurprising to developers who want to just be able to look at code and have a good idea of what it does. Punctuation is very useful to get rid of ambiguity. Contr

Consensus approaches are terrible ways to design languages. It's why Java took so long to evolve, where C# rapidly adapted to changing needs; and why C++ lingered in a long state of crappiness until Stroustroup came back and is now pus

This is a software problem, not a Rails or even a Ruby problem. I've seen Java/C++/C# systems collapse under their own weight just as often as Ruby/Python/PHP because they don't invest the time in cleaning up t

Hmmm, I wonder what the long-term effects of this will be if the tariffs stay in place for a while. 25% is a huge bump. I can see two major effects: 1) Lots of the "last screw" manufacturing will move to other countries and then i
