For an individual yes, hold the cash. But from what I can gather, banks in some countries must keep their reserves in something other than cash (typically bonds). EDIT: It encourages banks to lend, rather than sit on a giant pile of money.

Anecdotally, they've also done relatively well here in Ontario ever since they dropped the prices to 200$ and up. Many of my friends and family have one (no Kindle Fire up here).

It's the same with power bricks. My sister had her netbook brick go and the price for a new one was nearly a third the price of a new netbook.
