OpenStreetMap has a lot of things left to map. Sometimes, some correct data is better than no data.

You can add a "source" tag to changesets. But if someone doesn't want to use that, they can just turn it off.

Yes that's totally wrong. The OSMF (now) has about 1,000 members, and OpenStreetMap has ~4,200,000 registered accounts.

This post is from 20 Nov. The situation is evolving and the OSMF board is looking into it and looks like it has overrules that working group.

> A fine (no matter how big) will be seen by FB and its investors just as “cost of doing business" Depends how big you think. FB had revenues of $40bil. So let's fine them $50 billion.

I never said it was easy to keep Google running. The complete opposite instead.

OSM has used an "On the ground rule" for a long time. For names and for country borders.

How long does it take to get a sysadmin up to speed? And how much money do they lose while their websites are unavailable? What happens if YouTube.com doesn't work for a week while they get up to speed?

I hope they get somewhere. There's a tactic that has historically been quite effective. A strike. Sysadmins can't be replaced on a moments notice, taking weeks to get up to speed. If google.com 404s for a few minutes, management w

Combined with becoming a massively popular and influencial media company. Facebook can swing elections. So people who get elected are gonna get suspicious.

Fair enough. But the OSM project would rather not try to find the legal limits of this idea, and would rather play it safe.

There is "Vector Tiles" which do client side rendering, look at OpenLayers, Tangram or MapboxGL. Server side rendering can be less intensive for the client, since it just has to show an image.

How do you want to use it? On your android phone you can just get an app like Maps.me, or OSMAnd.

It takes, weeks to get a sysadmin up to scratch. You can't get scabs in if you go on strike. If the employees turn off google.com for 5 minutes, management will talk.

Even if 90% of men never do it, it's possible for 10% of the men to harass (say) 80% of women. So "not all men", but "yes, all women" is accurate. That's just how statistics work.

"Maps" is the Maps.me app but without the adverts and tracking. For the record OpenStreetMap doesn't have one official app. It doesn't even have any "official" apps. People use OSM data to make other maps.

OSM is a wiki, anyone can edit things, and there's wiki-like community review. So the owner of a business can add the details if they want, or someone walking past and looking at a sign can.
