I do remember the good stuff MSR has done, but does it justify the cost? Microsoft has probably spent about half its current market capitalization on MSR (very rough estimate based on its budget for the last few years: 7-8 billion, and the

Note that I am specifically talking about research "that will never produce a dollar." That was the whole point of the article - stock holders shouldn't be subsidizing research that has a ~0% chance of benefiting the company; a lot of MSR i

I agree that Microsoft wastes resources on research. Normally, I love the idea of private companies funding research, but Microsoft has a habit of not using its research for anything commercial. Instead, they file for thousands of patents a

That guy on reddit is a troll, and his comment was modded down. No free social site will ever be invulnerable to trolls, but they must be ignored. I post on both reddit and here, and I think your generalization that "everyone over there jus

I agree with others. Putting a service you don't know is worth paying for on a list called "services worth paying for" is misleading - and yes, most people skim long lists.

Then there's another article on the front page (From $80,000 a year to eviction) full of stories of people leaving their jobs and then getting screwed when they need a new one. Not everything is as simple as "leave your crappy, back-breakin

Craigslist is like a social network site - its users and brand name are its sole asset. The actual design of the site isn't ideal, but it's enough to keep the masses happy, and that's what matters. A single competent competitor could take i

Scipy - it can be used like matlab, but it's python. At the very least, make sure your solution can easily and efficiently work with linear algebra, a plotting tool, and some basic statistics functions.
